Addiction Counselor Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a addiction counselor in New York?
The primary credential for addiction counselors in New York is the Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor, or CASAC, issued through the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports. Candidates must complete an OASAS-approved education program, accumulate supervised clinical hours, and pass the required examination. Those pursuing clinical licensure typically earn a master's degree in counseling, social work, or a related field and obtain an LMHC, LCSW, or LMFT through the New York State Education Department.
Which companies hire addiction counselors in New York?

New York's large integrated health systems, OASAS-licensed treatment programs, and nonprofit behavioral health organizations account for a significant share of consistent openings across the state.
Which New York cities have the most addiction counselor jobs?
New York, Bronx, and Ithaca lead New York for addiction counselor openings, driven by the concentration of hospital systems, OASAS-licensed outpatient and residential programs, and community mental health centers that cluster in major population centers and their surrounding suburbs.
Are there remote addiction counselor jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since much addiction counseling involves in-person group sessions, facility-based programming, and hands-on client support. How can I get hired as a addiction counselor in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is pursuing a CASAC-Trainee registration through OASAS, which allows you to work under supervision while accumulating the required clinical hours toward full credentialing. Many New York City Health and Hospitals facilities, NYC-based nonprofit providers, and large residential programs hire trainees and recent graduates into substance use counselor aide or case management associate roles. Adjacent positions in peer support, crisis counseling, or social work case management are common lateral moves that build the documented experience needed to qualify for a full counselor opening.
