Preferred skills such as advanced certifications and EMR familiarity enhance the therapist's ability to manage complex cases and document care accurately. Tips for Your Registered Respiratory Therapist Job Search
List every credential you hold
Your resume should clearly display your RRT credential, any ACCS, NPS, or SDS specialty credentials, and BLS and ACLS certifications. Recruiters filter on these fast, and missing or buried credentials will cost you interviews before a human reads your resume.
Tailor your resume to the care setting
A hospital ICU posting wants evidence of ventilator management and arterial blood gas interpretation. A home health posting wants patient education and independent case management. Swap out bullet points to match the specific environment, not just the job title.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists registered respiratory therapist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings by shift and acuity level
Filter for night, rotating, or weekend differentials if those fit your schedule, and look for postings that specify ICU, step-down, or general floor acuity. Applying to roles that match your actual clinical experience reduces the chance of a skills mismatch in the first interview.
Prepare for a clinical scenario interview
Most respiratory therapist interviews include at least one real-world scenario, such as a deteriorating COPD patient or an intubated neonate on unconventional ventilation modes. Practice walking through your assessment, intervention, and documentation steps out loud before the interview.
Negotiate total compensation, not just base pay
Shift differentials, on-call pay, continuing education reimbursement, and credential maintenance support vary significantly between employers. Ask about each during the offer stage, since these can meaningfully affect your real take-home across a year of shifts.
Registered Respiratory Therapist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most registered respiratory therapists?
The companies hiring the most registered respiratory therapists right now include Ascension, Banner Health, and CHRISTUS Health, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Florida, and Illinois, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Health system consolidation has increased demand at large regional and national hospital networks.
How many registered respiratory therapist jobs are remote?
About 0% of registered respiratory therapist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is low compared to most healthcare roles given the hands-on nature of the work. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote options are telehealth respiratory consultation, sleep study scoring, and pulmonary disease case management.
How do you become a registered respiratory therapist?
You start by completing an accredited respiratory therapy program, which awards either an associate or bachelor's degree. After graduating, you pass the Therapist Multiple-Choice and Clinical Simulation Examination administered by the NBRC to earn the RRT credential. Most states then require you to obtain a state respiratory care license before practicing clinically.
Can you get hired as a registered respiratory therapist with little experience?
Yes, new graduates are regularly hired into general floor or step-down positions, especially at health systems with formal respiratory therapy residency or mentorship programs. Highlighting clinical rotations in your resume, specifying the patient populations you worked with, and obtaining your ACLS before applying will strengthen your candidacy against candidates with more years on the floor.
What does the registered respiratory therapist interview process look like?
Most interviews begin with a phone or video screen from HR or a hiring coordinator, followed by a panel or one-on-one interview with the respiratory therapy director and a charge therapist. Expect clinical scenario questions covering ventilator troubleshooting, emergent airway management, and patient education. Some employers include a brief written or computerized clinical assessment before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to registered respiratory therapist jobs?
You can find and apply to registered respiratory therapist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from hospitals, long-term acute care facilities, home health agencies, and outpatient clinics across the United States. Find roles that match your credentials, experience level, and preferred care setting, then apply directly to each listing.
