Tips for Your Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist Job Search
Lead your resume with ABC certification
Hiring managers scan for your ABC or BOC credentials in the first few lines. List your certification, residency completion date, and any specialty areas like pediatrics or upper-limb prosthetics before your work history so reviewers can qualify you instantly.
Document patient outcomes in concrete terms
Vague claims like 'improved patient mobility' don't stand out. Describe the device types you fabricated, the patient populations you served, and specific functional milestones patients reached. Employers want to know your clinical scope, not just your job duties.
Target employers by payer mix and caseload
A VA medical center, a private O&P clinic, and a hospital outpatient department have very different caseloads and billing environments. Read job postings closely for payer mix, referral volume, and whether the role is primarily fitting, fabrication, or both before you apply.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists certified prosthetist/orthotist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for a clinical scenario interview
Many O&P hiring panels include a case presentation or ask you to walk through a device selection decision for a specific diagnosis. Practice explaining your clinical reasoning for common cases like transtibial amputation or scoliosis bracing out loud before your interview.
Negotiate your continuing education allowance
ABC certification requires ongoing CEUs, and conference costs add up quickly. When you receive an offer, ask specifically about the annual CEU budget, whether fabrication lab time counts toward professional development, and whether the employer covers recertification fees separately.
Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most certified prosthetist/orthotists?
The companies hiring the most certified prosthetist/orthotists right now include Hanger, Sanford Health, and Sanford Bismarck, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Minnesota, and North Dakota, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Large national O&P practice groups, VA medical centers, and hospital health systems tend to post the highest volume of roles consistently.
How many certified prosthetist/orthotist jobs are remote?
About 0% of certified prosthetist/orthotist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, since most roles require hands-on patient fitting and device fabrication. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid flexibility include clinical education, O&P product specialist roles with device manufacturers, and certain administrative or management positions within larger practice networks.
How do you become a certified prosthetist/orthotist?
You earn a master's degree from a CAAHEP-accredited O&P program, which includes both didactic coursework and supervised clinical training. After graduating, you complete a residency accredited by NCOPE in both prosthetics and orthotics. Once your residency is complete, you sit for the ABC or BOC board examinations. Passing both the written and patient management exams earns you the CPO credential, after which most states require you to obtain a separate state license.
Can I get hired as a certified prosthetist/orthotist with little experience?
Yes, many employers hire newly credentialed CPOs, especially within large O&P networks and VA facilities that have structured mentorship programs. Highlight your residency caseload, the device categories you fabricated, and any clinical rotations in specialty areas like pediatrics or upper-limb prosthetics. Some employers also post resident or associate CPO roles specifically designed for candidates in their first year or two after certification.
What does the certified prosthetist/orthotist interview process look like?
Most hiring processes include an initial phone or video screen with a recruiter or clinic manager, followed by an in-person interview that often involves a facility tour and a clinical case discussion. You may be asked to walk through your device selection rationale for a sample patient scenario or demonstrate familiarity with a specific patient population. Final rounds sometimes include a meeting with the medical director or a peer panel of existing clinicians before an offer is extended.
