Tips for Your Marriage And Family Therapist Job Search
Tailor your resume to licensure status
Many MFT postings filter candidates by licensure tier, so list your exact credential (AMFT, LMFT, LMFTA) prominently and name the state that issued it. Recruiters scanning dozens of applications stop at mismatches between posted requirements and unlabeled credentials.
Highlight your clinical hours breakdown
Employers want to know how your supervised hours split across modalities and populations, not just the total count. Break out individual, couple, and family sessions separately on your resume so hiring managers can match your experience to their caseload mix immediately.
Filter openings by required supervision status
Associate-level roles requiring onsite supervision differ structurally from fully licensed positions, and applying to the wrong tier wastes time on both sides. Read postings carefully for phrases like 'license eligible,' 'pre-licensed,' or 'independent licensure required' before you apply.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists marriage and family therapist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare case conceptualization examples for interviews
MFT interviews frequently ask you to walk through a case using a specific theoretical model like structural, narrative, or emotionally focused therapy. Prepare two or three anonymized examples that show your clinical reasoning from intake through treatment planning, not just the presenting problem.
Negotiate caseload size alongside salary
High caseloads drive burnout and affect the quality of your clinical work, so ask about average weekly sessions and documentation expectations during the offer stage. Employers who are transparent about caseload targets tend to have lower turnover and stronger supervision structures.
Marriage And Family Therapist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most marriage and family therapists?
The companies hiring the most marriage and family therapists right now include LifeStance Health, Behavioral Health Practice Services, and Sutter Health, with the largest share of openings in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Michigan, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Community mental health organizations and telehealth providers tend to post the highest volume of openings consistently.
How many marriage and family therapist jobs are remote?
About 52% of marriage and family therapist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the expansion of telehealth delivery across the field. Remote opportunities are most concentrated in individual adult therapy and couples counseling, where synchronous video sessions replicate in-person formats most effectively, while child and family work more often requires in-person or hybrid arrangements.
How do you become a marriage and family therapist?
You become a marriage and family therapist by earning a master's degree in marriage and family therapy or a closely related counseling field from a program accredited by COAMFTE or a regionally accredited institution. After graduating, you accumulate supervised clinical hours as a registered associate or intern under a licensed supervisor, then pass your state's required licensing exams, which typically include the MFT National Examination administered by AMFTRB.
Can you get hired as a marriage and family therapist with little experience?
Yes, many employers hire pre-licensed associates who are still accumulating supervised hours toward full licensure. Community mental health centers, federally qualified health centers, and group practices structured around associate supervision are the most common entry points. Emphasizing your practicum and internship populations, any specialty training in trauma or adolescent work, and your theoretical orientation helps you stand out against other associate-level candidates.
What does the marriage and family therapist interview process look like?
Most MFT interviews begin with a phone or video screen focused on licensure status, availability, and general clinical background. A follow-up interview with a clinical director or lead therapist typically includes questions about your theoretical orientation, how you handle high-risk clients, and your approach to family systems dynamics. Some employers add a brief written case conceptualization or ask you to role-play an intake scenario before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to marriage and family therapist jobs?
You can find and apply to marriage and family therapist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your licensure status, preferred population, and work setting, then apply directly to each opening that fits your background and career goals.
