Tips for Your Physical Therapist Job Search
Tailor your resume to the setting
Outpatient ortho clinics and acute care hospitals look for different things. Highlight patient volume and caseload types that match the posting, and list manual therapy or modality skills that are specific to that practice setting.
List every active license by state
Many physical therapist roles, especially in travel and telehealth-adjacent positions, require licensure in multiple states. Put each active license prominently on your resume so recruiters don't screen you out before reading further.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists physical therapist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings by population you treat
Search using your patient population, such as pediatric, geriatric, or sports, not just the job title. Many high-volume postings bury the specialty in the description, and filtering by it surfaces openings that generic searches miss.
Prepare outcomes data before your interview
Interviewers at outpatient and sports medicine clinics routinely ask about your functional outcome scores and discharge rates. Pull concrete figures from your most recent role and practice framing them in plain language before you walk in.
Negotiate your productivity expectations
Units per hour and patient-per-day targets vary widely and directly affect your day-to-day workload. Ask the hiring manager for the current productivity standard during the offer stage, not after you accept.

Most employers start with a phone screen focused on your clinical background and licensure status, followed by an in-person or video interview with the clinic director or department manager. You'll typically be asked to walk through a patient case scenario or describe your approach to a common diagnosis. Some outpatient practices include a half-day working interview where you observe or shadow before a final offer.
