What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in mental health counseling jobs.
- Master's degree in counseling, social work, or a related clinical field
- Active state licensure or associate licensure under supervision (LPC, LMHC, LCSW, or equivalent)
- Experience with evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT, or motivational interviewing
- Proficiency with electronic health record systems for clinical documentation and billing
- Ability to conduct intake assessments, treatment planning, and crisis intervention
- Experience serving specific populations such as adolescents, adults with co-occurring disorders, or trauma survivors
Tips for Your Mental Health Counseling Job Search
List your licensure status clearly
Hiring managers filter by licensure before reading anything else. Put your credential abbreviation, the issuing state, and expiration date at the top of your resume, not buried in a footer. If you're pre-licensed, label it 'associate' or 'intern' with your supervisor's credential noted.
Tailor your modalities to each posting
Employers list required modalities like CBT, DBT, or EMDR as non-negotiable filters. Match your resume's clinical skills section to the exact language in each posting, since 'trauma-focused CBT' and 'TF-CBT' read differently to applicant tracking systems.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists mental health counseling openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Address caseload capacity in your cover letter
Community mental health centers frequently ask about caseload tolerance in first-round interviews. Naming a realistic range you've managed, and the documentation system you used, signals clinical maturity before the phone screen and separates you from candidates who stay abstract.
Prepare for a live clinical skills demonstration
Many outpatient and school-based employers include a role-play or case conceptualization exercise in the second interview. Practice summarizing a presenting problem using a specific diagnostic framework out loud so your clinical reasoning sounds natural under observation, not rehearsed from a textbook.
Negotiate supervision hours, not just pay
For pre-licensed roles, the number of individual supervision hours per week and whether the employer pays the supervisor's fee directly affects how fast you reach independent licensure. Ask about this during the offer stage, since it often has more long-term value than a modest salary difference.
Mental Health Counseling Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most mental health counselings?
The companies hiring the most mental health counselings right now include LifeStance Health, Youth Villages, and Eliot Community Human Services, with the largest share of openings in Massachusetts, New York, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Community mental health centers and integrated healthcare networks tend to post the highest volumes year-round.
How many mental health counseling jobs are remote?
About 12% of mental health counseling openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with telehealth-only roles being most common in outpatient individual therapy and employee assistance program counseling. Crisis stabilization, school-based, and residential positions almost always require an in-person presence due to the nature of direct client care.
How do you become a mental health counseling?
You start by earning a master's degree in counseling, clinical mental health counseling, or a closely related field from an accredited program. After graduating, you accumulate supervised clinical hours under a licensed professional, the exact count of which varies by state. Once you meet your state's supervised experience requirement, you sit for a licensure exam such as the NCE or NCMHCE and apply for your independent license through your state board.
How do you get hired as a mental health counseling with little experience?
Target roles that specifically accommodate pre-licensed candidates, such as associate counselor or counselor-in-training positions at community mental health centers, which are built around providing the supervision hours you still need. Highlight any practicum or internship caseload, the populations you served, and the modalities you practiced. Agencies that bill Medicaid often hire at the associate level because the credential requirement is lower than for fully independent roles.
What does the mental health counseling interview process look like?
Most employers start with a phone or video screen focused on your licensure status, availability, and caseload experience. A second interview typically involves a clinical director or lead counselor who asks you to walk through a case conceptualization or describe your approach to a specific presenting issue. Some outpatient practices and school districts add a short role-play exercise before extending an offer to assess your therapeutic style directly.
Where can I find and apply to mental health counseling jobs?
You can find and apply to mental health counseling jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your licensure level, preferred setting, and clinical specialty, then apply directly to each one that fits.
