Tips for Your Orthodontic Assistant Job Search
Tailor your resume to chair-side duties
List specific procedures you've assisted with, such as bonding, wire changes, and retainer fittings, rather than generic clinical support tasks. Orthodontic hiring managers scan for procedure familiarity first, so front-load your most hands-on experience.
Highlight your digital scanning certifications
Experience with iTero, 3Shape, or similar intraoral scanners is a genuine differentiator right now. If you've completed manufacturer training or worked with a CAD/CAM workflow, name the system explicitly on your resume and in your cover letter.
Target DSOs alongside independent practices
Large dental service organizations post openings continuously and often hire for multiple locations at once, giving you more scheduling and location flexibility. Search for both practice names and DSO parent brands to avoid missing a large portion of active listings.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists orthodontic assistant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for a clinical skills walkthrough
Many orthodontic interviews include a bench test or a verbal walkthrough of a bonding appointment from prep to cleanup. Practice narrating each step out loud, naming instruments by correct name and explaining infection control steps, before your interview day.
Negotiate your start date around credentialing timelines
If you're completing a coronal polishing course or renewing your CPR certification, flag the exact completion date during your offer conversation. Most practices will hold a start date two to four weeks out rather than lose a qualified candidate over a short credentialing gap.
Orthodontic Assistant Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most orthodontic assistants?
The companies hiring the most orthodontic assistants right now include Axpm Dental Management, Rodeo Dental & Orthodontics, and Western Dental & Orthodontics, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Multi-location DSO groups and regional orthodontic networks tend to post the highest volume of openings at any given time.
How many orthodontic assistant jobs are remote?
About 2% of orthodontic assistant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most chair-side roles. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote flexibility include patient coordinator functions, treatment plan consulting, and administrative scheduling support within larger orthodontic groups.
How do you become an orthodontic assistant?
You typically complete a dental assisting program at a community college or vocational school, then gain hands-on clinical experience in a general dentistry or orthodontic setting. Many employers also require CPR certification and a state-specific coronal polishing or radiography permit. Some orthodontic practices train chair-side skills on the job, so entry-level applicants with a dental assisting credential and strong soft skills are regularly considered for open positions.
Can you get hired as an orthodontic assistant with little or no experience?
Yes, many orthodontic practices hire candidates with a dental assisting diploma or certificate and train them on orthodontic-specific procedures in-house. Emphasizing any clinical externship hours, exposure to sterilization protocols, and patient-facing work from your program will strengthen an entry-level application. Smaller independent offices and growing DSO groups tend to be the most open to training new graduates who demonstrate reliability and a genuine interest in orthodontics.
What does the orthodontic assistant interview process look like?
Most orthodontic assistant interviews begin with a phone or video screen focused on your clinical background and availability. An in-person visit typically follows, where you may tour the clinic, meet the orthodontist and team, and walk through a simulated or verbal clinical scenario covering instrument setup, bonding steps, or patient flow. Some practices ask candidates to complete a short written skills check or a hands-on tray setup before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to orthodontic assistant jobs?
You can find and apply to orthodontic assistant jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from practices and DSO groups across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your location, experience level, and specialty focus, then apply directly to each position that fits.
