Registered Respiratory Therapist Jobs in Pennsylvania: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a registered respiratory therapist in Pennsylvania?
You must complete an accredited respiratory therapy program at the associate or bachelor's level, pass the Therapist Multiple-Choice and Clinical Simulation Examinations administered by the National Board for Respiratory Care to earn the Registered Respiratory Therapist credential, and then obtain a Pennsylvania respiratory therapist license through the State Board of Medicine under the Pennsylvania Department of State. Both the national credential and the state license are required before you can practice independently in Pennsylvania.
How much do registered respiratory therapists make in Pennsylvania?
Registered respiratory therapists in Pennsylvania earn a median of about $78,490 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,440 for the lowest 10% to over $95,520 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire registered respiratory therapists in Pennsylvania?
Companies currently hiring registered respiratory therapists in Pennsylvania include UPMC, Penn State Health, and Geisinger, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Pennsylvania's large integrated health systems and academic medical centers generate the steadiest volume of openings across inpatient, outpatient, and home health settings.
Which Pennsylvania cities have the most registered respiratory therapist jobs?
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Allentown lead Pennsylvania for registered respiratory therapist openings. Philadelphia's concentration of academic medical centers and specialty hospitals drives the largest share, while Pittsburgh's UPMC and Allegheny Health Network anchors strong demand in the west, and Allentown's rapid health system growth through Lehigh Valley Health Network sustains consistent hiring in the Lehigh Valley corridor.
Are there remote registered respiratory therapist jobs in Pennsylvania?
Yes, but they're rare. Registered respiratory therapy is a hands-on clinical role requiring direct patient contact, so most positions are fully on-site. About 0% of registered respiratory therapist openings tied to Pennsylvania are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those roles tend to be in telehealth triage, utilization review, or respiratory therapy education rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a registered respiratory therapist in Pennsylvania with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate residency or transition-to-practice programs run by large Pennsylvania health systems, particularly UPMC and Penn Medicine, which periodically open structured positions for newly credentialed therapists in general medical or step-down units. Candidates who hold a current Pennsylvania respiratory therapist license and the Registered Respiratory Therapist credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care before applying move faster through screening. Lateral experience as a patient care technician, pulmonary function technician, or polysomnographic technician at a Pennsylvania hospital also strengthens an application considerably.
Where can I find and apply to registered respiratory therapist jobs in Pennsylvania?
