Mental Health Clinician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mental health clinician in New York?
Becoming a mental health clinician in New York requires a master's degree in a clinical field such as social work, mental health counseling, or marriage and family therapy, followed by obtaining a limited permit and completing supervised post-graduate hours under a licensed supervisor. The New York State Education Department Office of the Professions oversees licensure for LCSWs, LMHCs, LMFTs, and LCATs, and each credential has its own supervised hours and exam requirements through bodies like ASWB or the NBCC.
Which companies hire mental health clinicians in New York?
Employers hiring mental health clinicians in New York right now include ANDRUS, The Institute for Family Health, and Hamilton Madison House, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of federally qualified health centers, Article 31 clinics, and large integrated health systems means openings appear across a wide range of settings, from large academic medical centers to community-based organizations serving underserved populations.
Which New York cities have the most mental health clinician jobs?
Bronx, New York, and Astoria have the most mental health clinician openings in New York. New York City dominates by volume because of its sheer concentration of hospital systems, community mental health centers, and private group practices, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand through regional health systems, state agency offices, and university-affiliated clinics that serve surrounding rural and suburban communities.
Are there remote mental health clinician jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most clinical fields, because telehealth has become a mainstream service delivery model for outpatient therapy and psychiatric care. About 9% of mental health clinician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how widely New York insurers and Article 31 clinics have adopted telehealth reimbursement. The roles most likely to be fully remote are outpatient therapy positions with established telehealth panels, rather than crisis, inpatient, or community field-based roles.
How can I get hired as a mental health clinician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for limited-permit positions at New York City Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, or large Article 31 community mental health clinics, which regularly hire provisionally licensed candidates who are accruing supervised hours. Case manager, crisis counselor, and behavioral health technician roles at these organizations are common lateral entry points that build the clinical hours required for full licensure. Having a limited permit from the New York State Education Department and a strong practicum placement at a recognized New York site gives candidates a meaningful edge over unlicensed applicants.
Where can I find and apply to mental health clinician jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to mental health clinician jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state updated in real time. Find roles that fit your license level, specialty, and preferred location, and apply directly to the employer through the listing.
