Practice Assistant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a practice assistant in New York?
The path depends on the practice setting. For medical practice roles, New York employers typically look for a certificate or associate degree in medical assisting, and candidates seeking clinical duties may need registration through a recognized credentialing body such as the American Medical Technologists. For legal or financial practice settings, a relevant degree and demonstrated administrative experience are the standard entry points. New York has no single statewide license for the practice assistant title itself, so the credential that matters is the one tied to your target specialty.
Which companies hire practice assistants in New York?
Companies currently hiring practice assistants in New York include NYU Langone Health, The Guthrie Clinic, and Thompson Health, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's density of large hospital systems, AmLaw 100 law firms, and financial services headquarters means consistent demand across all three sectors throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most practice assistant jobs?
New York, Rochester, and Amherst are the cities with the most practice assistant openings in New York. New York City drives the largest share because it is home to the state's biggest hospital networks, major law firms, and financial institutions, while Albany's concentration of state government offices and healthcare systems and Buffalo's regional medical centers account for strong demand outside the metro.
Are there remote practice assistant jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Practice assistant work is largely on-site because it involves direct support of practitioners, patients, or clients in a physical office. About 13% of practice assistant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those tend to be concentrated in billing, records management, and administrative coordination roles that don't require a physical presence.
How can I get hired as a practice assistant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a medical or legal assistant certificate program at a New York community college, such as those offered through CUNY or SUNY campuses, which often include externships that convert to job offers. Large New York health systems like Northwell Health and NYC Health and Hospitals run new-graduate and associate programs that accept candidates without prior professional experience. Lateral moves from receptionist, medical scribe, or file clerk roles are also a common door. A certified medical assistant credential or a notarized background check gives candidates a clear competitive edge at the application stage.
Where can I find and apply to practice assistant jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to practice assistant jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings updated regularly. Search the listings, identify the roles that match your background and target setting, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
