Oncologist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an oncologist in New York?
Becoming an oncologist in New York requires completing medical school, a residency in internal medicine, radiation oncology, or a related field, and then a fellowship in oncology. After training, you must obtain an active New York State medical license through the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions, pass the relevant USMLE steps, and pursue board certification through the American Board of Internal Medicine or the American Board of Radiology depending on your subspecialty.
How much do oncologists make in New York?
Oncologists in New York earn a median of about $127,360 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $76,670 for the lowest 10% to over $208,640 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire oncologists in New York?
Employers hiring oncologists in New York right now include OneOncology, Kaleida Health, and VCA Animal Hospitals, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's density of NCI-designated cancer centers and large academic health systems means demand is consistent throughout the year rather than seasonal.
Which New York cities have the most oncologist jobs?
Albany, New York, and White Plains have the most oncologist openings in New York. New York City accounts for the largest share by a significant margin given the concentration of major cancer centers and academic medical campuses there, while Buffalo and Rochester are driven primarily by Roswell Park and the University of Rochester Medical Center respectively, which anchor regional oncology care for western New York.
Are there remote oncologist jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of oncologist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the hands-on, patient-facing nature of most oncology roles. The positions most likely to carry a remote or hybrid component are those involving tumor board consultations, second-opinion reviews, telehealth follow-up visits, or administrative and medical director responsibilities rather than primary clinical care.
How can I get hired as an oncologist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path for a candidate without attending-level experience is completing a fellowship at a New York institution and converting that training position into an attending role, which Memorial Sloan Kettering, NewYork-Presbyterian, and Roswell Park all support through structured new-attending onboarding programs. Academic medical centers frequently hire candidates directly out of fellowship into junior attending or instructor roles. Securing board eligibility before your job search and obtaining your New York State medical license early in your final fellowship year gives you a meaningful advantage in a competitive candidate pool.
Where can I find and apply to oncologist jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to oncologist jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring in New York right now. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your specialty and experience level, and apply directly to each position.
