Oncologist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a oncologist in California?
Becoming an oncologist in California requires completing medical school, a residency in internal medicine or a related field, and an accredited oncology fellowship, after which you must obtain a California Medical Board license by passing the USMLE and submitting a verified application. California also requires enrollment in CURES, the state's controlled substance monitoring program, before prescribing. Board certification in your oncology subspecialty, while not legally required to practice, is expected by virtually every California employer and hospital credentialing committee.
How much do oncologists make in California?
Oncologists in California earn a median of about $125,550 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,250 for the lowest 10% to over $203,350 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire oncologists in California?
Employers hiring oncologists in California right now include OneOncology, City of Hope, and Ethos Veterinary Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's mix of large academic health systems, NCI-designated cancer centers, and established community oncology networks means openings appear across a wide range of practice settings and subspecialties throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most oncologist jobs?
The California cities with the most oncologist openings are San Francisco, Corona, and Duarte. Los Angeles and San Francisco anchor the list because of their concentration of academic medical centers, NCI-designated cancer programs, and major multispecialty health systems, while San Diego's strong biotech and research sector drives additional demand from institutions with integrated clinical and research oncology programs.
Are there remote oncologist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Oncology is a predominantly hands-on clinical specialty, so most positions require in-person patient care, tumor board participation, and on-site procedural work. About 4% of oncologist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to concentrate in teleoncology consultation roles, second-opinion services, and utilization management or medical director positions that do not involve direct procedural care.
How can I get hired as a oncologist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing your oncology fellowship and applying directly to new-attending or first-year staff positions within large California academic systems such as UC Health campuses, which regularly recruit fellowship graduates and offer structured mentorship in the early years of practice. Community oncology networks and federally qualified health centers across California also hire newly board-eligible oncologists and provide supervised environments to build independent practice volume. Securing your California Medical Board license and CURES enrollment before fellowship ends, and presenting fellowship research or case volume during interviews, give candidates a measurable edge over competitors still completing credentialing.
Where can I find and apply to oncologist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to oncologist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across health systems, academic medical centers, and community oncology practices. Find the roles that fit your subspecialty, preferred location, and practice setting, then apply directly to each one through the listing.
