Speech Therapist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a speech therapist in California?
To become a speech therapist in California, you must earn a master's degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited program, complete a supervised Clinical Fellowship Year, and pass the Praxis examination in Speech-Language Pathology. You then apply for licensure through the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. California requires this state license before you can practice independently in any clinical, school, or healthcare setting.
How much do speech therapists make in California?
Speech therapists in California earn a median of about $118,970 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $79,750 for the lowest 10% to over $160,900 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire speech therapists in California?
Employers hiring speech therapists in California right now include CommonSpirit Health, Fox Rehabilitation Physical, Occupational And Speech Therapy Services, and AHMC Healthcare, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's mix of large integrated health systems, county school districts, and pediatric specialty hospitals means openings appear across a wide range of settings and patient populations statewide.
Which California cities have the most speech therapist jobs?
Alhambra, Anaheim, and French Camp have the most speech therapist openings in California right now. Los Angeles leads because of its scale, with major hospital networks, one of the country's largest unified school districts, and a dense outpatient therapy market, while the Bay Area and San Diego draw consistent demand from children's hospitals, research medical centers, and well-funded school systems.
Are there remote speech therapist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're less common than in many other fields because much of the work requires in-person assessment, hands-on treatment, and direct patient contact. About 0% of speech therapist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in teletherapy for school-age children, adult fluency coaching, and early intervention services where California-licensed telepractice is permitted.
How can I get hired as a speech therapist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing your Clinical Fellowship Year with a California employer who hires new graduates directly into supervised CFY roles, which large school districts such as Los Angeles Unified and hospital systems like Kaiser Permanente and Dignity Health do on a regular basis. Targeting positions listed as clinical fellow, speech-language pathology fellow, or CFY clinician is the clearest door in. Candidates who hold their California state license application in progress alongside a strong CFY placement record, ASHA student membership, and a documented caseload from graduate externships stand out in a competitive applicant pool.
