Family Medicine Physician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a family medicine physician in California?
To become a family medicine physician in California, you must earn a medical degree from an accredited school, complete a three-year accredited family medicine residency, and obtain a full and unrestricted physician and surgeon license from the California Medical Board. The board requires passing USMLE or COMLEX steps and a background review. Most California employers also expect board certification from the American Board of Family Medicine before or shortly after hire.
How much do family medicine physicians make in California?
Family medicine physicians in California earn a median of about $252,010 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,510 for the lowest 10% to over $475,480 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire family medicine physicians in California?
Employers hiring family medicine physicians in California right now include Sutter Health, One Medical, and Purple Cow Recruiting, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's scale means both large integrated systems and independent community health center networks post openings year-round, particularly those serving Medi-Cal patient populations across urban and rural counties.
Which California cities have the most family medicine physician jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Modesto have the most family medicine physician openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its sheer population and the density of federally qualified health centers and multi-site health systems operating there, while the Bay Area and San Diego volumes reflect the large integrated networks and academic medical centers anchored in those metros.
Are there remote family medicine physician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Family medicine is a hands-on clinical role, so the overwhelming majority of positions require in-person patient care. About 13% of family medicine physician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those roles are almost exclusively in telephonic or asynchronous telemedicine, typically within panel-based virtual care programs run by larger California health systems.
How can I get hired as a family medicine physician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly out of residency to new-graduate or first-year attending positions at California's federally qualified health centers, which actively recruit new graduates and often provide loan repayment through the National Health Service Corps. Large California systems such as Kaiser Permanente and County of Los Angeles Department of Health Services also run structured onboarding tracks for new attendings. Holding an unrestricted California Medical Board license and ABFM board eligibility gives new graduates a clear edge over candidates who have not yet completed those steps.
Where can I find and apply to family medicine physician jobs in California?
