Oncology Registered Nurse Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a oncology registered nurse in California?
You become an oncology registered nurse in California by earning an Associate Degree in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, passing the NCLEX-RN, and obtaining an active California RN license through the California Board of Registered Nursing. From there, most nurses build oncology experience in a medical-surgical or general acute care unit before transitioning into a dedicated oncology role. Earning the Oncology Nursing Society chemotherapy and biotherapy certification strengthens your candidacy considerably in California's competitive market.
How much do oncology registered nurses make in California?
Oncology registered nurses in California earn a median of about $140,270 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $101,260 for the lowest 10% to over $213,320 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire oncology registered nurses in California?
Employers hiring oncology registered nurses in California right now include UCLA Health, Sharp HealthCare, and Rady Children's Hospital, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated health systems and National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers drive much of the consistent demand across the state.
Which California cities have the most oncology registered nurse jobs?
Santa Monica, La Mesa, and Burbank have the most oncology registered nurse openings in California. Los Angeles and San Francisco anchor the list due to their concentration of major academic medical centers and comprehensive cancer programs, while San Diego's robust research hospital and biotech-affiliated health system community keeps it among the top markets for oncology nursing roles.
Are there remote oncology registered nurse jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Oncology nursing is a hands-on, patient-facing role, so the vast majority of positions require in-person work at a clinical site. About 7% of oncology registered nurse openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be in oncology care coordination, telephonic triage, or patient navigation rather than direct infusion or bedside care.
How can I get hired as a oncology registered nurse in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a new graduate nurse residency program with a California health system that includes an oncology rotation or direct oncology placement. Large California employers like UCLA Health, Cedars-Sinai, and UCSF Health run structured residencies designed for nurses without specialty experience. Starting in a medical-surgical or hematology-adjacent unit, then transferring internally into oncology, is another well-established route. Completing your ONS chemotherapy and biotherapy certification early signals commitment and gives you a concrete edge over other new-graduate candidates.
Where can I find and apply to oncology registered nurse jobs in California?
You can find and apply to oncology registered nurse jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across health systems, cancer centers, and outpatient infusion clinics. Find roles that fit your experience level and location preference and apply directly through the listings.
