Phlebotomist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a phlebotomist in California?
California requires phlebotomists to hold a Phlebotomy Technician certification issued by the California Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services division, making it one of the few states with a mandatory state-level credential. To qualify, candidates must complete an approved phlebotomy training program and log the required supervised venipuncture and skin puncture draws. After training, you apply to the CDPH for certification before working independently in a clinical setting.
How much do phlebotomists make in California?
Phlebotomists in California earn a median of about $56,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $45,490 for the lowest 10% to over $74,340 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire phlebotomists in California?
Employers hiring phlebotomists in California right now include Quest Diagnostics, Labcorp, and AHMC Healthcare, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated health systems and independent reference laboratories post consistently throughout the year, particularly in major metro areas where patient volume stays high.
Which California cities have the most phlebotomist jobs?
Orange, Los Angeles, and Riverside have the most phlebotomist openings in California right now. Los Angeles dominates due to its scale and density of hospital campuses and reference labs, while San Diego and San Francisco are driven by major academic medical centers, biotech-adjacent diagnostics firms, and busy outpatient networks that require continuous staffing.
Are there remote phlebotomist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Phlebotomy is a hands-on clinical role that requires direct patient contact, so most positions are on-site by nature. About 0% of phlebotomist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those typically involve coordination, training, or scheduling roles rather than direct draws.
How can I get hired as a phlebotomist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a California Department of Public Health-approved phlebotomy training program and applying to new graduate or externship openings at large hospital systems like Kaiser Permanente or Dignity Health, both of which accept candidates who have met the state certification draw requirements. Lateral moves from patient care technician or medical assistant roles are common and well-recognized by California hiring managers. Holding your California Phlebotomy Technician certification before applying gives you a clear edge over candidates still completing training.
Where can I find and apply to phlebotomist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to phlebotomist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across hospital systems, laboratories, blood centers, and outpatient clinics. Find the roles that fit your certification level and location, and apply directly to each employer through the listing.
