Health Information Technology Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a health information technology in California?
The most direct path is completing an accredited health information technology or health information management program, then earning the Registered Health Information Technician credential through AHIMA, which requires passing a national examination. California does not issue a separate state license for health information technology professionals, but most California employers treat the RHIT as a baseline hiring standard. Graduates of California community college HIT programs are eligible to sit for the RHIT exam immediately upon completing their degree.
How much do health information technologies make in California?
Health information technologies in California earn a median of about $90,750 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $57,770 for the lowest 10% to over $167,650 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire health information technologys in California?
Employers hiring health information technologys in California right now include Elica Health Centers, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and United Health Centers, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's integrated health systems, county health departments, and large medical groups post consistently across the state, making it one of the more active hiring environments for HIT professionals nationally.
Which California cities have the most health information technology jobs?
Sacramento, Beverly Hills, and Fresno have the most health information technology openings in California. Los Angeles and San Francisco lead due to the concentration of large hospital systems, health plans, and academic medical centers, while Sacramento draws significant volume from state government health agencies and regional networks such as UC Davis Health and Sutter Health that anchor the Central Valley market.
Are there remote health information technology jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most healthcare roles, because health information technology work is largely desk-based and data-driven rather than hands-on clinical. About 0% of health information technology openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the field's shift toward virtual coding, remote auditing, and distributed data teams. Medical coding, health data analysis, and clinical documentation improvement roles are the most consistently offered in remote formats.
How can I get hired as a health information technology in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a California community college HIT or health information management program and applying for entry-level roles such as medical records technician, coding assistant, or health data clerk with large California health systems. Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, and UCSF Health regularly hire new graduates into structured onboarding cohorts. Earning the RHIT credential before or shortly after your first application significantly strengthens your candidacy against more experienced candidates in the California market.
