Public Health Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a public health in California?
Most public health roles in California require at minimum a bachelor's degree in public health or a related field, with many county and state positions preferring a Master of Public Health. Environmental health specialists must earn the Registered Environmental Health Specialist credential through the California Department of Public Health's REHS program, which requires a qualifying degree, supervised experience, and a written exam. Health officers at the local level typically hold a medical license in addition to public health training.
Which companies hire public healths in California?
Employers hiring public healths in California right now include California Department of Public Health, Lighthouse Community Public Schools, and North East Medical Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size means both large county agencies and integrated health systems like Kaiser Permanente consistently post public health roles alongside community clinics and nonprofits funded through Medi-Cal and state grants.
Which California cities have the most public health jobs?
San Francisco, Sacramento, and Los Angeles account for the largest concentration of public health openings in California. Los Angeles and the Bay Area dominate because of the sheer scale of their county health departments, academic medical centers, and community health organizations, while San Diego's military population, border health priorities, and UC San Diego Health drive a steady volume of specialized postings.
Are there remote public health jobs in California?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields because much of public health work involves community outreach, fieldwork, and in-person program delivery. About 21% of public health openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the remote options concentrated in health data analysis, policy research, grant writing, and epidemiological surveillance roles.
How can I get hired as a public health in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a county health department internship or public health corps fellowship, with Los Angeles County, Alameda County, and the California Department of Public Health all running structured early-career programs. Candidates can also move laterally from community health worker, health educator, or research assistant roles. Completing a REHS internship, earning a Certified Health Education Specialist credential, or building a portfolio of volunteer outbreak investigation or data analysis work gives applicants a competitive edge for entry-level postings.
Where can I find and apply to public health jobs in California?
You can find and apply to public health jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
