NP Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an NP in California?
To become an NP in California, you must first hold a California Registered Nurse license, then complete an accredited master's or doctoral NP program, pass a national certification exam through AANP or ANCC, and apply to the California Board of Registered Nursing for NP and furnishing authorization. California requires a separate furnishing number to prescribe medications, which is applied for through the Board of Registered Nursing alongside your NP authorization.
Which companies hire NPs in California?
Employers hiring NPs in California right now include Sutter Health, Wound Care, and Carbon Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's scale and its large integrated health systems mean NP demand is spread across hospital-based practices, large medical groups, and federally qualified health centers serving diverse urban and rural communities.
Which California cities have the most NP jobs?
Los Angeles, Sacramento, and San Diego have the most NP openings in California. Los Angeles and the Bay Area generate the highest volume because of their dense concentration of academic medical centers, large multispecialty groups, and community health networks, while San Diego's strong military and veterans' healthcare infrastructure adds consistent demand for advanced practice roles in primary and behavioral health care.
Are there remote NP jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. NP work is predominantly hands-on and patient-facing, so most positions require on-site presence. About 27% of NP openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those roles are concentrated in telehealth primary care, psychiatric evaluations, and chronic disease management where video visits are clinically appropriate and widely accepted by California insurers.
How can I get hired as an NP in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path for new NPs in California is applying directly to new-graduate NP residency or fellowship programs, which Kaiser Permanente, UCSF Health, and several large county health systems run specifically for new graduates without post-certification experience. Targeting federally qualified health centers and community clinics in underserved areas is also effective, as these organizations are accustomed to onboarding new NPs and often offer loan repayment incentives. Completing your clinical hours in California during your NP program and obtaining your California furnishing number before graduation gives you a meaningful edge.
Where can I find and apply to NP jobs in California?
You can find and apply to NP jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to California employers and locations. Search the listings for roles that match your specialty and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
