Speech Language Pathologist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a speech language pathologist in California?
You must earn a master's degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited program, complete a supervised clinical fellowship year, and obtain a license from the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. California requires passing the Praxis examination in Speech-Language Pathology as part of the licensure process. Most California employers also expect or prefer the CCC-SLP credential from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association alongside the state license.
How much do speech language pathologists make in California?
Speech language pathologists in California earn a median of about $118,970 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $79,750 for the lowest 10% to over $160,900 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire speech language pathologists in California?
Employers hiring speech language pathologists in California right now include CommonSpirit Health, FOX Rehabilitation, and Ascend Rehab, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large school districts, integrated health systems, and pediatric specialty networks consistently generate some of the highest volumes of openings in the state.
Which California cities have the most speech language pathologist jobs?
Sacramento, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles have the most speech language pathologist openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its scale of school districts, hospital networks, and rehabilitation providers, while San Francisco and San Diego draw volume from major academic medical centers and the concentration of pediatric and outpatient clinic operators in those metro areas.
Are there remote speech language pathologist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're less common than in desk-based fields, since most SLP work involves direct patient or student contact in clinical or school settings. About 0% of speech language pathologist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. Teletherapy roles serving school districts and outpatient caseloads represent the segment of the field most likely to offer fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a speech language pathologist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing your clinical fellowship year through a California employer, since large school districts like Los Angeles Unified and integrated health systems like Kaiser Permanente and Dignity Health regularly take on CFY candidates as a pipeline to full hire. Entry-level openings are also common in skilled nursing facilities and early intervention programs, where caseload demand is high and competition is lower than in pediatric outpatient clinics. Having your California license application submitted and your Praxis score ready before the fellowship ends gives you a meaningful advantage in a competitive applicant pool.
Where can I find and apply to speech language pathologist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to speech language pathologist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across school districts, hospital systems, outpatient clinics, and rehabilitation settings. Find roles that fit your specialty and experience level and apply directly.
