Clinical Dietitian Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a clinical dietitian in California?
To become a clinical dietitian in California, you must earn at least a bachelor's degree in nutrition or dietetics from an accredited program, complete a supervised dietetic internship, and pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration examination to earn the Registered Dietitian credential. California also requires a separate state dietitian-nutritionist license, issued through the California Board of Dietetic Practice. You must hold both the national credential and the California license before practicing independently in most clinical settings.
How much do clinical dietitians make in California?
Clinical dietitians in California earn a median of about $98,850 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,780 for the lowest 10% to over $130,850 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire clinical dietitians in California?
Employers hiring clinical dietitians in California right now include Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and CommonSpirit Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated health systems and academic medical centers generate some of the most consistent openings, particularly for specialized inpatient and outpatient clinical nutrition roles.
Which California cities have the most clinical dietitian jobs?
Los Angeles, Palo Alto, and Beverly Hills have the most clinical dietitian openings in California. Los Angeles and San Diego anchor hiring through their dense networks of large hospital systems and academic medical centers, while San Francisco's concentration of major integrated health networks and research hospitals drives strong demand in the Bay Area.
Are there remote clinical dietitian jobs in California?
Yes, but they are uncommon. Clinical dietitian work is primarily hands-on, involving bedside assessments, chart reviews, and direct patient interaction in hospital and outpatient settings. About 0% of clinical dietitian openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with telehealth nutrition counseling and outpatient medical nutrition therapy consultations representing the portions of the role most likely to be conducted remotely.
How can I get hired as a clinical dietitian in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate or dietetic residency programs run by large California health systems. Kaiser Permanente and Cedars-Sinai periodically offer clinical nutrition residency tracks designed for newly credentialed dietitians. Entry-level titles such as clinical nutrition associate or diet tech roles in hospital food and nutrition services allow candidates to build inpatient experience and often transition into full dietitian positions. Holding your California dietitian-nutritionist license before applying gives you a direct edge over candidates still awaiting state approval.
Where can I find and apply to clinical dietitian jobs in California?
You can find and apply to clinical dietitian jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to each opening.
