Family Medicine Physician Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a family medicine physician in Texas?
You must earn a medical degree from an accredited program, complete a three-year ACGME-accredited family medicine residency, and obtain a Texas Medical License through the Texas Medical Board. The TMB requires passing USMLE or COMLEX steps, submitting verification of training, and clearing a background review. Most Texas employers also require board certification through the American Board of Family Medicine, which involves a separate examination after residency.
How much do family medicine physicians make in Texas?
Family medicine physicians in Texas earn a median of about $235,710 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $75,150 for the lowest 10% to over $414,010 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire family medicine physicians in Texas?
Employers hiring family medicine physicians in Texas right now include Baylor Scott & White Health, Optum, and CHRISTUS Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large integrated systems and its network of community health centers create openings at a wide range of practice settings, from suburban multispecialty groups to underserved rural clinics across Central and West Texas.
Which Texas cities have the most family medicine physician jobs?
Houston, Fort Worth, and Humble have the most family medicine physician openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth lead because of their dense populations and major academic medical systems, while San Antonio's openings are driven by the large military and veterans healthcare infrastructure, including Brooke Army Medical Center and the South Texas Veterans Health Care System.
Are there remote family medicine physician jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of family medicine physician openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how fundamentally hands-on the role is. The portions most compatible with remote work are telemedicine-only panel positions and administrative or medical director roles where direct patient exams are not required.
How can I get hired as a family medicine physician in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly after residency to new-graduate physician programs run by large Texas systems such as Baylor Scott & White Health, UTHealth Houston, and Texas Health Resources, which regularly onboard first-year attendings. Federally qualified health centers throughout Texas, including those under the CommUnity Care and CommuniCare networks, frequently hire physicians without prior post-residency experience. Having an active Texas Medical License from the TMB and board certification eligibility strengthens any new-grad application significantly.
Where can I find and apply to family medicine physician jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to family medicine physician jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across health systems, community clinics, and private practices. Find roles that fit your specialty, setting, and location preference, then apply directly to each employer through the listing.
