Forensic Psychiatrist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a forensic psychiatrist in California?
To become a forensic psychiatrist in California you must complete medical school, a general psychiatry residency accredited by the ACGME, and a one-year forensic psychiatry fellowship. You then apply for a California medical license through the Medical Board of California, which requires passing the USMLE series. Most California employers also expect board certification in psychiatry from the ABPN, and many require completion of the subspecialty board in forensic psychiatry.
Which companies hire forensic psychiatrists in California?
Companies currently hiring forensic psychiatrists in California include CBIZ, Liberty Healthcare Corporation, and Deloitte, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. California's large public-sector infrastructure, including state hospital systems and county jail psychiatric services, means a significant share of forensic psychiatry openings come from government-affiliated health systems rather than private practices.
Which California cities have the most forensic psychiatrist jobs?
The cities with the most forensic psychiatrist openings in California are Los Angeles, San Diego, and Napa. Los Angeles dominates because of the scale of its county jail system, superior court network, and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, while Sacramento draws demand from state government agencies, the Department of State Hospitals, and proximity to California's legislative and correctional policymaking infrastructure.
Are there remote forensic psychiatrist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're limited. Forensic psychiatry is heavily court-facing and facility-based, so fully remote roles are the exception rather than the rule. About 43% of forensic psychiatrist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to involve record review, written forensic evaluations, or telehealth consultation rather than in-person court testimony or inpatient evaluation.
How can I get hired as a forensic psychiatrist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing a forensic psychiatry fellowship at a California-affiliated program, such as those connected to UC San Francisco, UCLA, or the University of Southern California, and applying directly to county mental health departments or the Department of State Hospitals for staff psychiatrist roles with a forensic focus. Lateral candidates with general psychiatry backgrounds and experience in correctional or inpatient settings often qualify for associate forensic evaluator positions that provide supervised forensic experience before full independent practice.
Where can I find and apply to forensic psychiatrist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to forensic psychiatrist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to California employers. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, specialty, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
