Tips for Your Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Job Search
Tailor your resume to practice setting
Health systems, FQHCs, and private practices each prioritize different things. A health system resume should highlight collaborative care models and EHR proficiency, while an FQHC resume needs to show comfort with underserved populations and sliding-scale billing environments.
List your DEA number and prescriptive authority
Many postings screen candidates before a human reads the resume. Make your DEA registration, state NPI, and full prescriptive authority status visible in your credentials section, not buried in a paragraph, so automated filters don't exclude you.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists primary care nurse practitioner openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter for collaborative practice agreements
Restrictive states require a physician collaboration agreement that can limit your autonomy and add overhead. When targeting openings, check the state's practice authority status first so you can ask specific, informed questions before accepting an interview.
Prepare for a clinical scenario interview
Most primary care NP interviews include at least one live case, such as a patient with uncontrolled hypertension and two comorbidities. Practice talking through your differential, your prescribing rationale, and how you'd coordinate follow-up care out loud, not just in your head.
Negotiate beyond base salary
CME stipends, malpractice tail coverage, loan repayment eligibility, and panel size caps all affect your day-to-day and long-term finances. Clarify each before signing, since these terms vary more than base compensation does across primary care settings.
Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most primary care nurse practitioners?
The companies hiring the most primary care nurse practitioners right now include Conviva Senior Primary Care, Carbon Health, and Optum, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Health systems and federally qualified health centers tend to post the highest volume of full-time openings.
How many primary care nurse practitioner jobs are remote?
About 9% of primary care nurse practitioner openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most primary care roles. Telehealth-only positions are most common in chronic disease management, behavioral health integration, and post-visit follow-up rather than full-scope primary care panels.
How do you become a primary care nurse practitioner?
You become a primary care nurse practitioner by first earning a registered nurse license, then completing a graduate-level NP program, either a Master of Science in Nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice, with a primary care focus such as family or adult-gerontology. After graduating, you pass a national board exam through ANCC or AANP, apply for NP licensure in your state, and obtain a DEA number if your state grants prescriptive authority.
Can I get hired as a primary care nurse practitioner with no experience?
Yes, new-grad primary care nurse practitioners do get hired, but you'll compete more effectively by leveraging your clinical rotation sites as references and targeting employers with formal NP residency or fellowship programs. FQHCs and rural health clinics often recruit new grads because they qualify for National Health Service Corps loan repayment, which makes those settings worth prioritizing when you have limited post-graduation experience.
What does the primary care nurse practitioner interview process look like?
Most primary care NP interviews run in two to three stages: a phone or video screen with a recruiter or practice manager, a clinical interview with the medical director or lead physician that typically includes a patient scenario, and a final conversation about scheduling, panel expectations, and compensation. Some health systems add a working interview where you shadow or see patients alongside an existing provider before a formal offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to primary care nurse practitioner jobs?
You can find and apply to primary care nurse practitioner jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your credentials, preferred setting, and location, then apply directly to each listing from the page.
