Tips for Your Pediatric Surgeon Job Search
Tailor your CV to each subspecialty
Pediatric surgery CVs are judged by case volume and procedure mix, not just credentials. Highlight your neonatal, oncologic, or trauma case numbers prominently, and align them to the specific subspecialty emphasis listed in each job posting.
Filter openings by academic versus community settings
Academic children's hospitals expect a research agenda and teaching duties, while community programs prioritize high surgical volume and breadth of practice. Identify which model fits your goals before applying so your cover letter speaks directly to what each employer values.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists pediatric surgeon openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Secure reference letters from program directors
Hiring committees at children's hospitals weight letters from fellowship program directors and division chiefs heavily. Ask for letters that address your specific operative competency and independence, not just your character, since those details carry the most weight in surgical hiring decisions.
Prepare a clinical philosophy statement before interviews
Many pediatric surgery programs ask candidates to articulate their approach to family-centered care and shared decision-making. Draft a concise statement in advance so you can speak to it naturally during faculty interviews and avoid generic answers that lose you points.
Negotiate protected time and call structure explicitly
Pediatric surgery contracts often bury call frequency and research or academic protected time in addenda. Request the full call schedule and any protected time commitments in writing before signing, and compare them directly across competing offers to avoid surprises after your start date.
Pediatric Surgeon Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most pediatric surgeons?
The companies hiring the most pediatric surgeons right now include Baylor Scott & White Health, Baylor College of Medicine, and Children's Mercy Hospitals & Clinics, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Georgia, and Missouri, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Children's hospital systems and academic medical centers consistently account for the majority of active openings across the country.
How many pediatric surgeon jobs are remote?
About 0% of pediatric surgeon openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of surgical practice. Administrative, telemedicine consultation, and second-opinion review roles within pediatric surgery are the sub-areas most likely to offer some degree of remote flexibility.
How do you become a pediatric surgeon?
You become a pediatric surgeon by completing a four-year undergraduate degree, four years of medical school, a five-year general surgery residency, and a two-year ACGME-accredited pediatric surgery fellowship. After fellowship, you apply for state medical licensure, sit for both general surgery and pediatric surgery board certification exams, and then apply for attending positions at children's hospitals or academic medical centers.
Can you get hired as a pediatric surgeon with limited experience?
Newly graduated fellows are the standard entry point for pediatric surgeon roles, so limited attending experience is not a disqualifying factor if you have completed a fully accredited fellowship. Emphasize your fellowship case log, any subspecialty rotations, and any published research or quality improvement projects to distinguish yourself from other new graduates competing for the same openings.
What does the pediatric surgeon interview process look like?
The pediatric surgeon interview process typically begins with a phone or video screening with the department chair or recruiter, followed by an in-person visit that includes one-on-one meetings with division faculty, a grand rounds or case presentation, a tour of the operating facilities, and a meeting with hospital administration. Final candidates usually receive a follow-up call with contract terms before a formal offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to pediatric surgeon jobs?
You can find and apply to pediatric surgeon jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your subspecialty and practice setting, then apply directly to each position that fits your goals.
