Tips for Your Travel Nurse RN Job Search
Tailor your resume to each contract
List every specialty unit you've worked in, your patient ratios, and the specific EMR systems you've used, such as Epic or Cerner. Recruiters and hiring managers scan for these details to verify you can hit the ground running on day one.
Verify your compact license coverage
Check whether your nursing license is issued under a Nurse Licensure Compact state before applying to assignments in other states. If it isn't, factor in the time and cost to obtain a single-state license before you commit to a start date.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists travel nurse rn openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by specialty and setting
Search for roles that match your strongest clinical specialty rather than applying broadly. A focused application to a telemetry or ICU opening where your experience is documented gives you a stronger chance than a general submission across multiple units.
Prepare for rapid credentialing interviews
Many travel nurse rn placements move from offer to start date in two to three weeks, so expect a brief phone screen focused on clinical competencies, shift flexibility, and housing. Have your certifications, references, and compliance documents organized before the call.
Negotiate housing stipends and shift differentials
When reviewing an offer, ask specifically how the housing stipend is calculated and whether night or weekend differentials are included in the base rate. These components vary significantly between contracts and affect your total take-home more than the listed hourly rate.
Travel Nurse RN Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most travel nurse rns?
The companies hiring the most travel nurse rns right now include Trinity Health, Ascension, and Health Carousel, with the largest share of openings in Iowa, Michigan, and Idaho, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in high-volume hospital systems and regional health networks with ongoing census needs.
How many travel nurse rn jobs are remote?
About 26% of travel nurse rn openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than most other healthcare roles given that direct patient care requires on-site presence. The sub-areas where remote or telehealth assignments are more common include utilization review, case management, and telephone triage nursing.
How do you become a travel nurse rn?
You become a travel nurse rn by first earning an associate or bachelor's degree in nursing, passing the NCLEX-RN, and obtaining your state license. From there, you build at least one to two years of clinical experience in a specialty unit, then apply to travel assignments that match your background, complete credentialing requirements, and accept a contract placement.
Can you get hired as a travel nurse rn with little experience?
Most travel nurse rn contracts require at least one year of recent experience in the assigned specialty because orientation is short and you're expected to function independently from the start. New graduates should build their skills in a staff position first, focusing on a high-demand specialty like ICU or ER, before transitioning to travel contracts where that experience is directly marketable.
What does the travel nurse rn interview process look like?
The travel nurse rn interview process typically starts with a brief phone screen covering your specialty background, certification status, and availability. A clinical interview or skills checklist may follow, often conducted by the hiring facility's nurse manager. Credentialing, reference checks, and compliance documentation run in parallel, so the process from application to confirmed start date moves quickly compared to permanent positions.
Where can I find and apply to travel nurse rn jobs?
You can find and apply to travel nurse rn jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search for roles that match your specialty and location preferences, then apply directly to each listing that fits your background and availability.
