Tips for Your Family Counselor Job Search
Tailor your resume to licensure level
Hiring managers scan for your licensure status immediately. List your credential acronym (LMFT, LPC, LCSW) prominently in your header and match it to what each posting requires, since an associate-level license and a fully licensed position are entirely different roles.
Highlight your clinical hours explicitly
Many family counselor postings require a minimum number of supervised clinical hours. State your completed hours, the supervision model, and the population you served directly on your resume so screeners don't have to guess whether you meet the threshold.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists family counselor openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings by treatment modality
Employers often filter candidates by therapeutic approach. Search for openings that name your core modality, such as CBT, EFT, or DBT, and mirror that language in your resume summary and cover letter to pass applicant tracking systems.
Prepare a case conceptualization example for interviews
Panel interviews for family counselor roles frequently ask you to walk through how you would conceptualize a presenting family case. Prepare one concise, de-identified example that demonstrates your theoretical orientation and your assessment-to-treatment planning process.
Negotiate supervision hours into your offer
If you still need supervised hours toward full licensure, raise this during the offer stage and ask whether the employer provides in-house clinical supervision. Many nonprofit and community mental health employers offer it, and getting this in writing protects your licensure timeline.
Family Counselor Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most family counselors?
The companies hiring the most family counselors right now include Park Lawn Corporation, Preferred Family Healthcare, and Cornerstone Family Healthcare, with the largest share of openings in Missouri, New York, and Illinois, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Community mental health centers and large hospital systems tend to post the highest volume of openings year-round.
How many family counselor jobs are remote?
About 5% of family counselor openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly telehealth has been adopted in the field. Roles focused on individual adult therapy and couples counseling are most likely to be fully remote, while positions serving children, court-mandated clients, or crisis populations are more often on-site.
How do you become a family counselor?
To become a family counselor, you first complete a master's degree in marriage and family therapy, counseling, or a closely related field. After graduating, you accumulate the supervised clinical hours your state requires, which typically involves working under a licensed clinical supervisor. You then pass your state's licensure examination and apply for full licensure. Requirements differ by state, so check your state licensing board for the exact hour and examination thresholds.
Can you get a family counselor job with little experience?
Yes, entry-level family counselor roles exist specifically for candidates who are newly graduated or still accumulating supervised hours toward full licensure. Community mental health agencies, federally qualified health centers, and school-based programs are the most common employers of associate-licensed counselors. Emphasize your practicum and internship placements, the populations you worked with, and any specialized training such as trauma-informed care or a specific therapeutic modality.
What does the family counselor interview process look like?
Most employers begin with a phone screen focused on licensure status and availability, followed by a structured in-person or video interview with a clinical supervisor or panel. You will typically be asked to describe your theoretical orientation, walk through a de-identified case example, and explain how you handle documentation and treatment planning. Some employers add a second-round interview with department leadership or ask you to complete a brief writing exercise such as a sample progress note.
Where can I find and apply to family counselor jobs?
You can find and apply to family counselor jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings for roles that match your licensure level, preferred population, and work setting, then apply directly to each one that fits. No detours or redirects, just a straightforward path from listing to application.
