Tips for Your Addiction Therapist Job Search
Tailor your resume to licensure requirements
Addiction therapist postings often specify required licensure by state, such as LCDC, CADC, or LPC with substance use focus. List your active licenses prominently at the top of your resume, including the issuing state, so hiring managers can confirm eligibility without digging.
Highlight your modality training specifically
Employers screen for named clinical approaches like Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for substance use, or EMDR for trauma-informed care. Name each modality you are trained in and note any formal certification or supervised hours completed, not just general experience.
Target settings that match your clinical goals
Inpatient detox units, outpatient intensive programs, medication-assisted treatment clinics, and correctional facilities each have distinct caseloads and documentation demands. Filter openings by setting type so you apply where your experience and preferred client population genuinely align.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists addiction therapist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for competency-based interview questions
Addiction therapist interviews frequently test your clinical judgment through case vignettes, asking how you would handle a client in active crisis or resistant to treatment. Practice concrete, scenario-based answers that reference your actual clinical framework rather than general counseling principles.
Negotiate your supervision arrangement upfront
If you are working toward full licensure, clarify before accepting an offer whether clinical supervision hours are provided on-site, who the approved supervisor is, and how frequently sessions occur. This affects how quickly you can reach independent licensure and should be discussed before you sign.
Addiction Therapist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most addiction therapists?
The companies hiring the most addiction therapists right now include Newark Wayne Community Hospital, Columbus Regional Health, and Deaconess Health System, with the largest share of openings in New York, Indiana, and Illinois, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Behavioral health networks and integrated hospital systems consistently account for a significant share of active postings.
How many addiction therapist jobs are remote?
About 0% of addiction therapist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with telehealth delivery most common in outpatient individual counseling, relapse prevention coaching, and aftercare follow-up roles. Inpatient detox, intensive outpatient group facilitation, and crisis stabilization positions remain almost entirely in-person due to clinical and regulatory requirements.
How do you become an addiction therapist?
You earn a master's degree in counseling, social work, or a closely related clinical field, then complete supervised clinical hours focused on substance use populations as required by your state's licensing board. After accumulating those hours you sit for your state licensure exam, and many practitioners also pursue a specialized credential such as a CADC or CAADC to strengthen their clinical standing.
How do you get hired as an addiction therapist with little or no experience?
Focus on roles that accept candidates working toward full licensure under supervision, which are common in community mental health centers and nonprofit treatment programs. Emphasize any practicum or internship hours you completed with substance use clients, name the clinical populations and settings involved, and obtain a substance-specific credential like a registered intern or associate status recognized by your state board.
What does the addiction therapist interview process look like?
Most addiction therapist interviews begin with a phone screen focused on licensure status and clinical background, followed by an in-person or video interview that often includes case vignettes or scenario-based questions testing your clinical decision-making. Some employers add a panel interview with the clinical director and peers, and certain inpatient or correctional settings require a facility tour or background check clearance before a formal offer.
Where can I find and apply to addiction therapist jobs?
You can find and apply to addiction therapist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your licensure, setting preference, and clinical specialization, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
