- Bachelor's or master's degree in athletic training from a CAATE-accredited program
- Experience with injury evaluation, rehabilitation, and return-to-play protocols

Tips for Your Certified Athletic Trainer Job Search
Highlight your BOC certification prominently
Recruiters scan for Board of Certification credentials in the first few lines of your resume. List your BOC certification, state licensure, and any additional credentials like CPR or orthopedic specialty certifications before your work history, not buried at the bottom.
Tailor your resume to the setting
A collegiate athletic training resume should emphasize multi-sport coverage and team travel experience, while a clinical or hospital-based resume should front injury assessment volume and documentation tools like EMR software. Generic resumes rarely advance past the first screen.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists certified athletic trainer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target openings by practice setting carefully
Job titles vary widely: you'll see 'athletic trainer,' 'sports medicine specialist,' and 'clinical athletic trainer' for roles that overlap. Search all three variations and read the duties section closely to confirm the setting matches your hands-on experience before applying.
Prepare for a practical or scenario-based interview
Many athletic training interviews include a scenario component where you walk through your assessment and triage decisions for a simulated injury. Practice articulating your clinical reasoning out loud, including when and how you would refer an athlete to a physician.
Negotiate your coverage load and schedule upfront
Evening and weekend game coverage, split-site assignments, and on-call responsibilities vary enormously between employers. Clarify expected hours and practice coverage expectations during the offer stage, not after you accept, since these directly affect your workload and professional boundary.
Certified Athletic Trainer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most certified athletic trainers?
The companies hiring the most certified athletic trainers right now include Riverview, LLP, CentraCare, and McLeod Health, with the largest share of openings in South Carolina, Tennessee, and Minnesota, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Outpatient sports medicine clinics and large university athletic departments consistently account for a significant portion of active postings.
How many certified athletic trainer jobs are remote?
About 0% of certified athletic trainer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most roles. Telehealth consultation, virtual injury triage coordination, and athletic training program administration roles are the sub-areas most likely to allow remote or hybrid arrangements.
How do you become a certified athletic trainer?
You become a certified athletic trainer by earning a degree from a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education-accredited program, completing required clinical hours under a supervising athletic trainer, and passing the BOC national examination. After passing, you apply for licensure in the state where you plan to practice, since each state sets its own licensure requirements independently.
Can you get hired as a certified athletic trainer with little experience?
Yes, entry-level certified athletic trainer positions exist, particularly at high schools, community colleges, and outpatient clinics that hire new graduates. Your clinical rotation sites and the specific populations you covered matter more than total years of experience. Listing each rotation setting, the sports covered, and any specialized injury types you assessed makes a thin work history far more competitive.
What does the certified athletic trainer interview process look like?
Most certified athletic trainer interviews include a phone screen with HR or a recruiter, followed by one or two rounds with the head athletic trainer or medical director. Expect clinical scenario questions about acute injury management, concussion protocol, and return-to-play decisions. Some employers, particularly at the collegiate level, require a campus visit and informal meetings with coaches or team physicians before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to certified athletic trainer jobs?
You can find and apply to certified athletic trainer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Find roles that match your setting, experience level, and specialization, then apply directly to each listing without being redirected away from the postings.
