Tips for Your Medical Social Worker Job Search
Tailor your resume to care settings
Hospitals, hospice agencies, and outpatient clinics each look for different experience. Mirror the language in each posting, whether that's 'interdisciplinary team collaboration' or 'discharge planning,' so your resume passes automated screening for that specific setting.
Highlight your licensure prominently
Put your MSW credential and state licensure level, LSW, LCSW, or LCSW-C, near the top of your resume. Many applicant tracking systems filter by licensure type before a recruiter ever sees your file.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists medical social worker openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings by care population served
Filter your search by patient population, geriatrics, pediatrics, oncology, or substance use, rather than job title alone. Roles serving the same population share competency requirements, making your application more targeted and your cover letter easier to write.
Prepare case-based answers for interviews
Interviewers in this field favor behavioral questions tied to crisis intervention, mandated reporting decisions, and family dynamics. Write out two or three specific case examples in advance, using outcome-focused language that shows what your assessment led to, not just what you observed.
Negotiate scope before accepting an offer
Before you sign, ask directly about caseload size, documentation systems like Epic or Meditech, and on-call expectations. These details vary widely by facility and affect burnout risk as much as any other factor in a medical social worker role.
Medical Social Worker Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most medical social workers?
The companies hiring the most medical social workers right now include Fresenius Medical Care, Maimonides Medical Center, and Rush University Medical Center, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Illinois, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Health systems, hospice networks, and rehabilitation facilities consistently account for the bulk of open roles.
How many medical social worker jobs are remote?
About 3% of medical social worker openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than many other social work specialties because most roles require in-person patient contact. Telehealth case management and utilization review positions are the sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements.
How do you become a medical social worker?
You become a medical social worker by earning a Master of Social Work degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, completing supervised field placements in clinical or healthcare settings, and obtaining state licensure after graduation. Many positions also require a period of post-licensure supervised practice before you qualify for independent clinical licensure, such as the LCSW.
Can you get a medical social worker job with little or no experience?
Yes, entry-level medical social worker roles exist, but they almost always require your MSW field placement hours to have been completed in a healthcare or clinical setting rather than a community or school context. Targeting case management roles at rehabilitation centers or outpatient clinics, where caseloads are structured and supervision is available, gives new graduates the strongest footing for breaking into the field.
What does the medical social worker interview process look like?
Most medical social worker interviews follow a two-stage process: an initial screening with HR or a recruiter, followed by a panel or one-on-one interview with a clinical supervisor or department director. Expect scenario-based questions on crisis assessment, discharge barriers, and family dynamics, along with questions about your documentation habits and experience with specific patient populations served by that facility.
Where can I find and apply to medical social worker jobs?
You can find and apply to medical social worker jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search for roles that match your licensure level, preferred care setting, and location, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
