Tips for Your Registered Nurse Operating Room Job Search
Tailor your resume to perioperative phases
OR nursing covers three distinct phases: scrubbing, circulating, and PACU handoff. List which you've performed independently, not just that you worked in the OR, so hiring managers can match you to the exact room role they're filling.
Lead with your CNOR certification status
Certified Perioperative Nurse credentials signal OR-specific competency that general RN licensure doesn't. Even if you're CNOR-eligible but haven't sat the exam, note your eligibility date so recruiters don't screen you out before reading further.
Target postings by surgical service line
Filter job listings by specialty, such as orthopedic, cardiovascular, or robotics-assisted surgery, rather than just job title. Service-line specificity in your application signals case familiarity that broad OR experience claims don't.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists registered nurse operating room openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for competency-based interview questions
OR interviews almost always include scenario questions about sterile field breaks, count discrepancies, and surgeon communication under pressure. Prepare specific examples using the STAR format for at least two high-stakes intraoperative situations you've managed.
Negotiate call requirements before accepting
Call obligation varies widely across OR positions and directly affects take-home compensation and lifestyle. Clarify mandatory on-call frequency, response time windows, and whether call shifts are included in your base FTE before you evaluate any offer.
Registered Nurse Operating Room Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most registered nurse operating rooms?
The companies hiring the most registered nurse operating rooms right now include Banner Health, Emory Healthcare, and Trinity Health, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Arizona, and Georgia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Large health systems and ambulatory surgery center networks consistently post the highest volume of OR RN roles.
How many registered nurse operating room jobs are remote?
About 0% of registered nurse operating room openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of intraoperative care. Remote opportunities that do exist tend to be in perioperative education, clinical informatics, or OR nurse consulting roles rather than direct patient care positions.
How do you become a registered nurse operating room?
You become a registered nurse operating room by first earning your RN license through an associate or bachelor's degree in nursing and passing the NCLEX-RN. From there, you complete a perioperative internship or new-grad OR training program, gain hands-on experience in scrubbing and circulating roles, and pursue CNOR certification to demonstrate specialty competency recognized by employers nationwide.
How do you get hired as an OR nurse with little experience?
Many hospitals offer perioperative nurse internships or new-grad OR training programs specifically designed for RNs without prior operating room experience. Highlighting any surgical technologist coursework, sterile processing exposure, or clinical rotations in procedural areas strengthens your application. Applying to ambulatory surgery centers, which often have shorter case lists and structured mentorship, is another practical starting point.
What does the registered nurse operating room interview process look like?
The OR nurse interview typically includes a phone or video screen with a recruiter, followed by a panel interview with the OR nurse manager and a charge nurse or educator. Expect scenario-based questions on sterile technique, instrument counts, and managing intraoperative emergencies. Some facilities include a skills lab or shadow shift to assess hands-on competency before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to registered nurse operating room jobs?
You can find and apply to registered nurse operating room jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search for roles that match your specialty background, experience level, and preferred location, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
