Tips for Your Pulmonologist Job Search
Tailor your CV to subspecialty
Separate your bronchoscopy case volume, pulmonary function interpretation experience, and critical care procedures into distinct sections. Hiring committees for academic versus community roles weight these very differently, so match the emphasis to each posting you apply to.
Filter openings by practice setting
Hospital-employed, multispecialty group, and solo private practice roles carry different call schedules, RVU expectations, and autonomy. Identify which setting fits your career goals before applying so you're not wasting interviews on positions you'd decline.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists pulmonologist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Verify board certification requirements upfront
Some postings require ABIM certification in pulmonary disease and critical care medicine before your start date, while others accept board-eligible candidates. Confirm the exact requirement before submitting so a certification timeline doesn't disqualify an otherwise strong application.
Prepare case-based answers for interviews
Pulmonology interview panels often present a diagnostic scenario involving ILD, COPD exacerbation, or a complex ICU case. Rehearse your clinical reasoning out loud, emphasizing how you communicate uncertainty and involve the team, not just what diagnosis you'd reach.
Negotiate your procedural volume guarantee
If bronchoscopy, EBUS, or thoracentesis volume matters to you, ask for a minimum procedural commitment in your contract, not just an assurance. Academic centers and community hospitals allocate these cases differently, and verbal promises rarely hold once you start.
Pulmonologist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most pulmonologists?
The companies hiring the most pulmonologists right now include Houston Methodist, Medical College of Wisconsin, and Beth Israel Lahey Health, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Wisconsin, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Both large health systems and regional hospital networks are actively recruiting, so openings vary widely by practice model and geography.
How many pulmonologist jobs are remote?
About 3% of pulmonologist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting a role that is largely clinic- and procedure-based. The sub-areas most likely to include remote components are telemedicine pulmonology consultations, sleep medicine follow-up visits, and utilization review or case management advisory roles.
How do you become a pulmonologist?
You complete medical school, then a three-year internal medicine residency, then a fellowship in pulmonary disease, which is typically two to three years and often combined with critical care medicine training. After fellowship you must pass ABIM board certification exams in pulmonary disease and, if applicable, critical care medicine before practicing independently.
Can you get hired as a pulmonologist with limited experience?
Yes, many hospital systems and academic medical centers hire physicians directly from fellowship as attending pulmonologists. The most effective way to gain a foothold with a thin post-training record is to apply for locum tenens or part-time hospitalist-pulmonology hybrid roles, which build an employment history and a network of referrals faster than waiting for a permanent opening.
What does the pulmonologist interview process look like?
Most pulmonology interviews begin with a phone or video screen with the department chair or medical director, followed by an on-site day that includes tours of the ICU and clinic, meetings with key partners such as thoracic surgery and the hospitalist group, and a panel interview with division leadership. Some programs also present a clinical or research case for discussion, and compensation and contract terms are typically addressed in a separate final conversation.
Where can I find and apply to pulmonologist jobs?
You can find and apply to pulmonologist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your subspecialty, practice setting preference, and location, then apply directly to each listing from the page.
