What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in speech pathologist jobs.
- Master's degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited program
- Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from ASHA
- Active state licensure in the state where the position is located
- Experience with pediatric or adult caseloads depending on the setting
- Proficiency in standardized assessments such as CELF, GFTA, PLS, or MBSS
- Familiarity with IEP documentation for school-based roles or EMR systems for clinical settings
Tips for Your Speech Pathologist Job Search
Tailor your resume to the setting
A school-based SLP resume should emphasize IEP development, caseload management, and collaboration with special education teams. A hospital resume should lead with dysphagia evaluation, instrumental assessment experience, and acute care protocols. One generic resume will not do both jobs well.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists speech pathologist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
List your licensure state by state
SLP licensure is state-specific, and many postings filter applicants by current state license. List every state where you hold an active license on your resume and application, so you aren't screened out of roles you're already qualified to fill.
Name every assessment tool you use
Hiring managers search for specific instruments like the CELF, GFTA, PLS, or MBSS. If you've administered them, list them explicitly in your resume skills section rather than writing 'standardized assessments,' which tells screeners nothing about your actual toolkit.
Prepare a clinical case example for interviews
Most SLP interviews include a scenario-based question about a complex or ambiguous case. Come ready with a real example that walks through your evaluation reasoning, treatment approach, and outcome, keeping patient details appropriately de-identified.
Negotiate your caseload cap, not just pay
In school and contract settings, caseload size directly affects your workload and quality of care. Ask about average caseload numbers and how they're determined before accepting any offer, so you're not agreeing to unsustainable conditions on day one.
Speech Pathologist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most speech pathologists?
The companies hiring the most speech pathologists right now include FOX Rehabilitation, HealthPRO Heritage, and Ivyrehab Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy & Speech-Language Pathology, Pllc, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. School districts, pediatric therapy groups, and acute care hospital systems consistently account for a large portion of total openings.
How many speech pathologist jobs are remote?
About 1% of speech pathologist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, driven largely by the growth of telepractice platforms. Teletherapy roles serving school-age children and adult patients with fluency or language disorders are the most common fully remote positions, while dysphagia and instrumental assessment roles almost always require in-person attendance.
How do you become a speech pathologist?
You earn a bachelor's degree in communication sciences or a related field, then complete a master's degree in speech-language pathology from a program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation. After graduating, you finish a supervised clinical fellowship, then pass the Praxis exam in speech-language pathology. Once you've passed, you apply for your state license and, if you choose, pursue the CCC-SLP credential from ASHA.
Can you get hired as a speech pathologist with little experience?
Yes, but the path depends on where you apply and how you frame your clinical hours. Graduate externship placements, practicum rotations, and clinic hours all count as supervised clinical experience and should appear on your resume with the setting, population, and hours logged. School districts and outpatient pediatric practices tend to be the most open to clinical fellows and new graduates, especially in underserved areas with persistent caseload vacancies.
What does the speech pathologist interview process look like?
Most SLP interviews begin with a phone or video screen focused on your licensure status, caseload experience, and availability. A structured in-person or virtual interview follows, typically with a hiring manager and sometimes a clinical lead, covering scenario-based questions about evaluation approaches, treatment planning, and documentation. School-based roles may also include a meeting with a special education coordinator or principal, and some employers ask for a brief writing sample or sample IEP goal.
Where can I find and apply to speech pathologist jobs?
You can find and apply to speech pathologist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search for roles that match your setting preference, specialization, and location, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
