Registered Behavior Technician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a registered behavior technician in California?
To become a registered behavior technician in California, you must complete a 40-hour training program based on the Behavior Analyst Certification Board Task List, pass the RBT competency assessment conducted by a supervising Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and pass the RBT exam administered by the BACB. California does not issue a separate state license for RBTs, so the national BACB credential is the standard credential that California employers recognize and require.
Which companies hire registered behavior technicians in California?
Companies currently hiring registered behavior technicians in California include Alora Behavioral Health, Autism Learning Partners, and Maxim Healthcare, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. California's large population of school-age children receiving ABA services and the state's robust Medi-Cal billing infrastructure make it one of the most active hiring environments for this role in the country.
Which California cities have the most registered behavior technician jobs?
The California cities with the most registered behavior technician openings are Los Angeles, San Jose, and San Diego. Los Angeles dominates the distribution because of its size, the density of regional autism service providers, and LAUSD's in-house behavioral support programs, while San Diego and Bay Area demand is driven by a combination of large behavioral health organizations and strong school district partnerships with outside ABA agencies.
Are there remote registered behavior technician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Because registered behavior technician work is hands-on and delivered in homes, schools, and community settings, remote options are limited by the nature of the role. About 6% of registered behavior technician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions typically involve telehealth parent training sessions or data entry and documentation support rather than direct one-on-one ABA therapy delivery.
How can I get hired as a registered behavior technician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for behavior technician aide or ABA tutor roles, which large California providers like Autism Spectrum Therapies and Easterseals Southern California use as stepping stones before full RBT certification. Completing the 40-hour BACB training before you apply gives you a concrete edge, and roles in special education paraprofessional or direct support professional positions at California school districts or regional centers are strong lateral moves that California employers treat as equivalent hands-on experience.
Where can I find and apply to registered behavior technician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to registered behavior technician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across the state's major hiring markets. Find roles that fit your experience, credential level, and preferred service setting, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
