Nurse Practitioner Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a nurse practitioner in California?
You earn an NP license in California by completing an accredited master's or doctoral NP program, passing a national certification exam such as the ANCC or AANP boards, and applying to the California Board of Registered Nursing for your advanced practice license. California also requires a separate furnishing number to prescribe medications and a DEA registration for controlled substances. The entire licensure process is managed through the California Board of Registered Nursing.
How much do nurse practitioners make in California?
Nurse practitioners in California earn a median of about $168,520 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $120,340 for the lowest 10% to over $240,830 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire nurse practitioners in California?
Employers hiring nurse practitioners in California right now include Carbon Health, Sutter Health, and Stanford Medicine Children's Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's scale of integrated health systems, federally qualified health centers, and large employer-based clinics means consistent openings exist across a wide variety of care settings and specialties.
Which California cities have the most nurse practitioner jobs?
Palo Alto, San Francisco, and San Diego have the most nurse practitioner openings in California. Los Angeles dominates by volume given the density of large hospital systems, community health centers, and multi-specialty groups, while San Francisco and San Diego reflect concentrated academic medical centers and integrated health networks that run continuous NP recruitment pipelines.
Are there remote nurse practitioner jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Nurse practitioner work is primarily hands-on and clinic-based, so fully remote positions make up a small share of openings. About 7% of nurse practitioner openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those roles tend to concentrate in telehealth triage, psychiatric mental health, and chronic disease management where patient contact can occur via video visit.
How can I get hired as a nurse practitioner in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to NP residency or fellowship programs run by California health systems, which are designed specifically for new graduates. Kaiser Permanente Northern and Southern California, UCSF Health, and UCLA Health all run structured NP transition-to-practice programs. Candidates who come from RN roles in the specialty they are targeting, such as ICU-to-acute care NP or ED RN-to-emergency NP, have a measurable edge. Holding your California Board of Registered Nursing NP license and national certification before applying removes the most common barrier to first-job offers.
Where can I find and apply to nurse practitioner jobs in California?
You can find and apply to nurse practitioner jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across health systems, community clinics, and specialty practices. Find roles that fit your specialty and experience level and apply directly to each one.
