Nurse Practitioner Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a nurse practitioner in Texas?
You become a licensed nurse practitioner in Texas by earning a Master of Science in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice from an accredited program, passing a national certification exam through ANCC or AANP, and then applying for advanced practice registered nurse licensure through the Texas Board of Nursing. Texas also requires you to establish a prescriptive authority agreement with a supervising or collaborating physician before you can prescribe medications independently in most practice settings.
How much do nurse practitioners make in Texas?
Nurse practitioners in Texas earn a median of about $131,670 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $96,880 for the lowest 10% to over $161,980 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire nurse practitioners in Texas?
Employers hiring nurse practitioners in Texas right now include Baylor Scott & White Health, CHRISTUS Health, and Houston Methodist, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large integrated health systems, federally qualified health centers, and growing urgent care networks consistently maintain some of the highest NP hiring volumes in the state.
Which Texas cities have the most nurse practitioner jobs?
Houston, Fort Worth, and Dallas have the most nurse practitioner openings in Texas right now. Houston's concentration of medical center campuses and regional hospital networks drives the highest absolute volume, while Dallas and San Antonio reflect strong suburban clinic growth and the presence of several large multispecialty and academic health system employers anchoring those metro areas.
Are there remote nurse practitioner jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 1% of nurse practitioner openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on clinical nature of most NP roles. The positions most likely to offer remote or telehealth-only arrangements are in psychiatric-mental health, chronic disease management, and utilization review, where patient interaction does not require an in-person visit.
How can I get hired as a nurse practitioner in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to a new-graduate NP residency or fellowship program, several of which are offered by large Texas employers including Baylor Scott & White Health and UT Health. These structured programs provide supervised clinical hours across specialties and are designed specifically for NPs without post-certification experience. Candidates who already hold an RN license in Texas can also transition into NP roles more easily by targeting positions that list RN experience as equivalent to NP experience, particularly in primary care and urgent care settings. Completing your national ANCC or AANP certification before applying puts you ahead of candidates still in the process.
