Nurse Practitioner Or Physician Assistant Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in Texas?
Nurse practitioners in Texas must hold a graduate-level nursing degree, pass either the ANCC or AANP board certification exam, and obtain licensure through the Texas Board of Nursing, which also governs prescriptive authority. Physician assistants are licensed by the Texas Medical Board after completing an accredited PA program and passing the PANCE exam. Both professions require a practice agreement with a supervising or collaborating physician under Texas state law.
Which companies hire nurse practitioner or physician assistants in Texas?
Employers hiring nurse practitioner or physician assistants in Texas right now include Baylor College of Medicine, Optum, and CHRISTUS Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's scale and mix of large integrated health systems, independent hospital groups, and expanding urgent care chains means consistent openings across a wide range of practice settings and specialties.
Which Texas cities have the most nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs?
Houston, San Antonio, and Austin account for the largest share of nurse practitioner or physician assistant openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth generate the highest volume given their concentration of major academic medical centers, large hospital networks, and specialty clinic groups, while San Antonio's strong military health infrastructure and growing civilian system add significant hiring activity across primary and specialty care.
Are there remote nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of nurse practitioner or physician assistant openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how hands-on clinical work limits full remote arrangements. The portion of the role most suited to remote or hybrid formats is telehealth, where some Texas health systems and direct-to-patient telehealth platforms operate remote NP and PA positions in chronic disease management and behavioral health.
How can I get hired as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new-graduate or residency program, and several large Texas employers run structured options worth targeting directly. Baylor Scott and White, UT Health, and Texas Children's Hospital have offered NP and PA residency or transition-to-practice fellowships that are designed for candidates without post-certification experience. Applying first to high-volume settings like urgent care, rural health clinics, or federally qualified health centers often works well because those sites hire new graduates more readily than competitive subspecialty practices. A completed supervised clinical rotation at a Texas institution can also give an application a meaningful edge.
Where can I find and apply to nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across health systems, clinics, and specialty practices. Find roles that fit your specialty, experience level, and preferred location, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
