Nurse Practitioner Or Physician Assistant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in California?
Nurse practitioners in California must hold a master's or doctoral degree in nursing and pass a national certification exam through ANCC or AANP before applying for licensure with the California Board of Registered Nursing. Physician assistants must complete an accredited PA program and pass the PANCE, then obtain licensure through the Medical Board of California. Both pathways also require a California Furnishing License or DEA registration to prescribe controlled substances in most clinical settings.
Which companies hire nurse practitioner or physician assistants in California?
Employers hiring nurse practitioner or physician assistants in California right now include Carbon Health, CommonSpirit Health, and Dignity Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size and dense health system infrastructure mean openings appear continuously across large integrated networks, safety-net clinics, and specialty groups throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs?
Carmichael, Sacramento, and San Francisco have the highest concentration of nurse practitioner or physician assistant openings in California. Los Angeles and the Bay Area drive volume through their large integrated health systems and dense specialty clinic networks, while San Diego's strong military and research hospital presence adds consistent demand and sustains openings even in suburban and community health settings throughout Southern California.
Are there remote nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Advanced practice roles in nursing and physician assisting are primarily hands-on, requiring direct patient contact, so fully remote positions make up a small share of the market. About 1% of nurse practitioner or physician assistant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. Telehealth roles in psychiatry, primary care follow-up, and chronic disease management are the most common remote options in this field.
How can I get hired as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate residency or fellowship programs, which Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, and several UC Health facilities in California run specifically for new NPs and PAs entering primary care, urgent care, or hospital medicine. Candidates who completed clinical rotations at California institutions have an advantage when applying to those same systems. Holding an active California license, a completed national certification, and documented preceptorship hours in a specialty like family medicine or emergency care strengthens any new-graduate application significantly.
Where can I find and apply to nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs in California?
You can find and apply to nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers hiring now.
