Child Psychiatrist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a child psychiatrist in California?
Becoming a child psychiatrist in California requires completing medical school, a general psychiatry residency, and a two-year child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship accredited by the ACGME. After training, you must obtain a California Physician and Surgeon license through the Medical Board of California, which involves passing the USMLE sequence and submitting a complete application before you may practice. Board certification in child and adolescent psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology is expected by most California employers.
How much do child psychiatrists make in California?
Child psychiatrists in California earn a median of about $353,500 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $113,990 for the lowest 10% to over $496,230 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire child psychiatrists in California?
Employers hiring child psychiatrists in California right now include LifeStance Health, Loma Linda University Health, and University of California, San Francisco, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size and mix of large integrated health systems, county-run behavioral health departments, and federally qualified health centers means openings appear across a wider range of organization types than in most states.
Which California cities have the most child psychiatrist jobs?
San Francisco, Corona, and Glendale have the most child psychiatrist openings in California. Los Angeles and San Francisco lead because of their concentration of academic medical centers, county behavioral health departments, and large integrated systems, while San Diego's strong military-affiliated and children's hospital networks generate consistent demand in what is otherwise a mid-size metro.
Are there remote child psychiatrist jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most clinical fields, because much of outpatient child psychiatry adapted successfully to telehealth. About 53% of child psychiatrist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly telehealth has been adopted for medication management and ongoing therapy follow-up. Diagnostic evaluations and inpatient or crisis roles remain predominantly on-site.
How can I get hired as a child psychiatrist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to fellowship training programs at California academic centers such as UCSF, UCLA, or Stanford, which are designed for physicians completing general psychiatry residency with no independent child psychiatry experience. County behavioral health departments across Los Angeles, Alameda, and Sacramento counties also hire early-career child psychiatrists into supervised outpatient roles. Holding an active Medical Board of California license and demonstrating clinical hours with pediatric populations, even from rotation, meaningfully strengthens applications for these positions.
Where can I find and apply to child psychiatrist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to child psychiatrist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to California employers and updates regularly. Search the listings for roles that match your specialty, experience level, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
