Mammography Technologist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mammography technologist in California?
To become a mammography technologist in California, you must complete an accredited radiologic technology program, earn ARRT certification in radiography, and then complete a mammography postprimary pathway through ARRT to add the (M) credential. California requires radiologic technologists to hold a valid fluoroscopy permit issued by the California Department of Public Health, and mammography-specific work must meet federal MQSA standards. Most California employers also require documented clinical hours in mammography before hiring independently.
How much do mammography technologists make in California?
Mammography technologists in California earn a median of about $121,260 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $70,210 for the lowest 10% to over $165,460 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire mammography technologists in California?
Employers hiring mammography technologists in California right now include Sutter Health, Cardinal Health, and Source Code, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated health systems and independent imaging centers both post consistently, with demand spread across urban medical campuses and suburban outpatient facilities throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most mammography technologist jobs?
Crescent City, Fresno, and Sacramento have the most mammography technologist openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its sheer concentration of hospitals, cancer centers, and outpatient imaging networks, while San Francisco and San Diego benefit from major academic medical centers and large system campuses that run high-volume breast imaging programs year-round.
Are there remote mammography technologist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Mammography is a hands-on imaging role requiring direct patient contact and specialized equipment, so the vast majority of positions are fully on-site. About 0% of mammography technologist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those are almost exclusively administrative, training, or quality assurance roles rather than direct patient care positions.
How can I get hired as a mammography technologist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate or entry-level radiologic technologist positions at large California health systems, then rotating into mammography. Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, and Sutter Health all run structured new-grad tech programs that include breast imaging exposure. Candidates who hold their ARRT (R) and are actively pursuing the mammography postprimary pathway stand out, and volunteering for cross-training in mammography suites while working as a general rad tech is a proven route in California facilities.
Where can I find and apply to mammography technologist jobs in California?
