OB/GYN Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a ob/gyn in California?
To practice as an ob/gyn in California you must hold a Physician and Surgeon license issued by the Medical Board of California, which requires completing medical school, passing all three steps of the USMLE, and finishing an accredited four-year OB/GYN residency. After residency, most California employers expect you to pursue board certification through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. California's licensing process also requires a background review and fingerprinting.
How much do OB/GYNs make in California?
OB/GYNs in California earn a median of about $301,240 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $103,330 for the lowest 10% to over $401,440 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire ob/gyns in California?
Employers hiring ob/gyns in California right now include CommonSpirit Health, Dignity Health, and Sutter Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated systems and county hospital networks tend to post the most consistent volume, particularly in urban counties with high-density underserved populations requiring obstetric coverage.
Which California cities have the most ob/gyn jobs?
Santa Cruz, Woodland, and Carmichael have the most ob/gyn openings in California, driven by the concentration of major academic medical centers, large integrated health systems, and county-run safety-net hospitals in those metro areas. Smaller cities on the list often reflect a large regional employer or a federally qualified health center network anchoring local obstetric demand.
Are there remote ob/gyn jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Ob/gyn is a hands-on clinical specialty, and the vast majority of roles require in-person patient care, delivery coverage, and surgical procedures. About 0% of ob/gyn openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are almost exclusively in telehealth triage, virtual prenatal consultations, or administrative and utilization management roles within larger California health systems.
How can I get hired as a ob/gyn in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic path for a newly trained ob/gyn in California is applying directly to residency-to-attending pipeline programs at large systems like Kaiser Permanente or UCLA Health, which regularly recruit graduating residents into staff or associate physician roles. County health systems such as LA County Department of Health Services and San Francisco Health Network hire new attendings for safety-net facilities where volume and mentorship are high. Fellowship training in maternal-fetal medicine or minimally invasive gynecologic surgery adds competitive advantage for new graduates without independent practice history.
Where can I find and apply to ob/gyn jobs in California?
You can find and apply to ob/gyn jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across health systems, medical groups, and community health centers. Find the roles that fit your specialty and experience, then apply directly to the employer through the listing.
