Tips for Your Nurse Practitioner Or Physician Assistant Job Search
Tailor your resume to each specialty
Highlight procedures you've performed, patient populations you've managed, and EMR systems you've used. A family medicine NP resume reads very differently from a psychiatric PA resume, and hiring managers notice when the clinical detail doesn't match the posted specialty.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists nurse practitioner or physician assistant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Clarify your scope of practice upfront
State laws governing NP and PA practice vary widely, and employers screen for candidates who already hold or can obtain the required state license. Confirm your collaborative agreement or supervisory requirements before applying to roles in an unfamiliar state.
Prepare for competency-based case questions
Interviews for NP and PA roles almost always include clinical scenario questions. Practice walking through your differential, your diagnostic reasoning, and your prescribing decisions out loud, not just in your head, so your clinical thought process comes across clearly.
Negotiate your full compensation package
Malpractice tail coverage, CME allowance, productivity bonuses, and call obligations are negotiable beyond base pay in most NP and PA offers. Get the on-call schedule and any production formula in writing before you sign, since these terms affect your actual take-home significantly.
Follow up after your interview strategically
Send a brief thank-you within 24 hours that references a specific clinical topic you discussed. This signals genuine engagement and keeps you distinct from other candidates, particularly in high-volume health system hiring where decision timelines can stretch across multiple committee reviews.
Nurse Practitioner Or Physician Assistant Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most nurse practitioner or physician assistants?
The companies hiring the most nurse practitioner or physician assistants right now include Signify Health, Optum, and Carbon Health, with the largest share of openings in Pennsylvania, California, and Minnesota, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Health systems, urgent care chains, and federally qualified health centers consistently account for the highest volume of postings.
How many nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs are remote?
About 2% of nurse practitioner or physician assistant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with telehealth platforms and behavioral health practices accounting for the largest share of those positions. Specialties such as psychiatry, chronic disease management, and primary care triage have seen the greatest expansion of remote-eligible roles.
How do you become a nurse practitioner or physician assistant?
Nurse practitioners complete a registered nursing degree, obtain RN licensure, gain clinical experience, and then earn a master's or doctoral degree in nursing practice, followed by national certification. Physician assistants complete a master's-level PA program accredited by ARC-PA and pass the PANCE exam for PA-C certification. Both paths require ongoing continuing medical education and periodic recertification to maintain licensure.
Can you get hired as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant without much experience?
New graduates can get hired, but competition is steepest for high-acuity or highly specialized settings. Targeting new-grad residency and fellowship programs at health systems gives you structured training and makes you competitive against more experienced candidates. Clinical rotations in your target specialty, strong preceptor references, and a cover letter that addresses your supervised hours in that area meaningfully offset limited post-graduation experience.
What does the nurse practitioner or physician assistant interview process look like?
Most hiring processes include an initial phone or video screen with a recruiter or practice manager, followed by a clinical interview with a supervising physician or department lead that includes patient scenario questions. Many employers also add a panel interview with colleagues or a short credentialing review session. The full process from first contact to offer typically runs several weeks, longer at large health systems.
Where can I find and apply to nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs?
You can find and apply to nurse practitioner or physician assistant jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Find the roles that match your specialty, state licensure, and experience level, then apply directly to each listing.
