INTRODUCTION
Academic Surgical Oncologist Opportunity in Southern California
Assistant/Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology
Loma Linda University Faculty Medical Group
Position Overview:
The Department of Surgery at Loma Linda University School of Medicine is seeking a fellowship trained surgical oncologist to join our team for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor of Surgery. Patients with a wide variety of complex general surgical oncology conditions are managed in the Loma Linda University Cancer Center and its network of affiliated clinics with a full complement of multidisciplinary specialists. The applicant must have a commitment to research and education and will work closely with medical students, residents, and fellows. The Department of Surgery currently trains one Complex General Surgical Oncology fellow per year and one International Surgical Oncology fellow per year. The Division of Surgical Oncology includes Complex General and Breast Surgical Oncology faculty in a Commission on Cancer accredited academic cancer program. The Division services a variety of practice settings, including the flagship tertiary academic medical center moving toward NCI designation, as well as affiliated community cancer programs and satellite clinics serving San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.
The current need is for a surgeon based at the main campus in Loma Linda to also provide a portion of their professional services in Apple Valley, CA, at a distance of 48 miles. This assignment, which will be co-held with the Division Chief, is designed to be an equitable sharing in the total portfolio of the Division, with the rest of the faculty also providing services at similar or greater distances and frequencies, helping to reduce access barriers and disparities in this underserved region.
Across all settings, surgeons have access to nine robotic platforms (both dv5 and da Vinci Xi), which the faculty regularly use for GI, endocrine, and HPB resections, including Whipple. The Division is also home to programmatic capabilities in managing peritoneal surface malignancy, providing hepatic arterial infusion therapy, and participating in clinical trials. These programs are further supported by advanced capabilities within other specialties such as Advanced Endoscopy and Interventional Radiology. With a focus on education, the Division offers one of five ACGME accredited Complex General Surgical Oncology fellowships in California and is one of only four institutions west of the Mississippi River with ACGME training programs in the “big three” of cancer—surgical oncology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology. The Division is also home to one of the very few programs in the United States offering regular, formal training in surgical oncology to international candidates for the mitigation of surgical oncology workforce deficiencies in low- and middle-income countries. There are ample leadership opportunities in this Division. Candidates must have appropriate board certification and licensure. Women and underrepresented surgeons are encouraged to apply.
The Department of Surgery Commitment is to enable surgical faculty and trainees to reach their highest professional and academic potential while serving the Loma Linda University mission to make people whole. Our vision is to create global surgical leaders in whole person care, education, and research. Faculty with interests in global surgery can participate in the University’s Center for Global Surgery.
Loma Linda University Faculty Medical Group is affiliated with Loma Linda University Health and School of Medicine, with the mission to deliver whole person care at a world-class level of clinical excellence. Tips for Your Surgical Oncologist Job Search
Tailor your CV to fellowship training
Highlight your fellowship institution, case volume by procedure type, and any tumor board leadership. Hiring committees at NCI-designated cancer centers weight fellowship pedigree heavily, so naming your training program and attending surgeons by specialty signals readiness immediately.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists surgical oncologist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target job postings by tumor site focus
Search for openings using your subspecialty focus, such as hepatobiliary, sarcoma, or endocrine oncology, rather than broad surgical oncologist terms. Departments recruiting for a specific tumor board slot will filter for subspecialty fit before reviewing general surgical oncology candidates.
Prepare a structured case presentation
Many academic programs ask candidates to present a complex case or a research project during the interview visit. Have a concise oncologic case ready that demonstrates your decision-making at the multidisciplinary level, not just technical execution in the OR.
Negotiate protected research time explicitly
If academic productivity matters to you, secure protected research or scholarly time in writing before signing. Verbal assurances during campus visits rarely translate to protected hours once clinical volume demands increase, so clarify the percentage and how it is protected contractually.
Follow up through the program coordinator
After an interview visit, send a brief thank-you to the division chief and copy the program coordinator. Coordinators track candidate communications and often flag responsiveness to search committees, especially when multiple finalists are otherwise similar in credentials.
Surgical Oncologist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most surgical oncologists?
The companies hiring the most surgical oncologists right now include CommonSpirit Health, OneOncology, and University of Utah, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Utah, and Oregon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Academic health systems and NCI-designated cancer centers consistently account for a large portion of active searches at any given time.
How many surgical oncologist jobs are remote?
About 4% of surgical oncologist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of the specialty. The sub-areas most compatible with remote or hybrid arrangements include telemedicine consultations, multidisciplinary tumor board participation, and administrative or medical directorship roles that do not require daily OR presence.
How do you become a surgical oncologist?
You complete a four-year medical degree, followed by a five-year general surgery residency, then a two-year surgical oncology fellowship accredited by the Society of Surgical Oncology. After fellowship you obtain state licensure, pursue board certification in surgery, and apply for attending positions at cancer programs or academic medical centers. Subspecialty expertise in a defined tumor site strengthens your candidacy considerably.
Can you get hired as a surgical oncologist without prior attending experience?
Yes, many positions are structured specifically for fellowship-trained candidates with no prior attending experience. Academic medical centers and larger cancer programs routinely hire directly out of fellowship and provide mentorship, protected time, and structured onboarding into tumor boards. Your fellowship case volume, procedural autonomy, and any research output carry more weight than post-training attending years at this stage.
What does the surgical oncologist interview process look like?
The process typically begins with a phone or video screening with the division chief or search committee, followed by a full-day campus visit that includes OR tours, meetings with department leadership, faculty, and multidisciplinary team members, a case or research presentation, and a credentialing pre-check. Some programs hold a second visit before extending an offer, particularly for senior or program director roles.
Where can I find and apply to surgical oncologist jobs?
You can find and apply to surgical oncologist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Find roles that match your subspecialty focus, practice setting preference, and career stage, then apply directly to each listing without leaving the platform.
