Tips for Your Mental Health Therapy Job Search
List every licensure level you hold
Employers filter by license type before they read anything else. List each credential you hold, the state it was issued in, and whether it is active or associate level. A resume that buries licensure in a footnote will be screened out before anyone reads your clinical experience.
Tailor your resume to the population served
Hiring managers in community mental health, school-based settings, and private practice each want a different candidate. Swap in the population you have the most hours with, such as adolescents, adults with serious mental illness, or co-occurring disorders, so your resume matches the specific role.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists mental health therapy openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight your modality training specifically
Saying you do evidence-based practice is not enough. Name the modalities you are trained in, such as CBT, DBT, EMDR, or motivational interviewing, and note whether you completed formal training or a certification program. Employers use these terms to search applicant pools.
Prepare a clinical case presentation
Many mental health therapy interviews include a case vignette or ask you to walk through a client scenario from assessment to treatment planning to discharge. Practice presenting a de-identified case that demonstrates your diagnostic reasoning and documentation habits before the interview.
Ask about supervision hours before accepting an offer
If you are working toward full licensure, confirm upfront whether the employer provides a qualified supervisor, how many individual hours are available each month, and whether supervision is counted toward your state requirement. This detail affects your career timeline more than most other offer terms.
Mental Health Therapy Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most mental health therapists?
The companies hiring the most mental health therapists right now include LifeStance Health, Behavioral Health Practice Services, and Centerstone, with the largest share of openings in Illinois, Massachusetts, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Community health centers and large behavioral health networks tend to post the highest volumes consistently.
How many mental health therapy jobs are remote?
About 25% of mental health therapy openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how widely telehealth has been adopted since platforms became standard in outpatient care. Roles focused on individual adult therapy and substance use counseling tend to have the highest remote availability, while school-based and crisis positions remain predominantly in person.
How do you become a mental health therapist?
You start by earning a master's degree in counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy, or a closely related field from a program accredited by the relevant body for your discipline. After graduating you complete the supervised clinical hours your state requires, which typically means working under a licensed supervisor in a clinical setting. Once you have your hours you sit for the licensure exam your state mandates, such as the NCE, NCMHCE, or LCSW exam, and then apply for your full license.
Can you get a mental health therapy job with no experience?
Yes, many entry-level mental health therapy roles are designed for candidates who have completed a graduate practicum or internship but have not yet accumulated post-degree hours. Community mental health centers, substance use treatment programs, and school-based settings regularly hire associate-level clinicians working toward full licensure. Framing your supervised practicum hours and the populations you saw during training gives hiring managers enough to evaluate your clinical foundation even without paid experience.
What does the mental health therapy interview process look like?
Most mental health therapy interviews begin with a phone or video screen focused on your licensure status, the populations you have worked with, and your modality training. A second round typically involves a panel interview with a clinical director or lead therapist who will ask you to walk through a case scenario or describe how you approach a specific clinical situation. Some employers, particularly those in community health or residential settings, also ask you to complete a documentation exercise or review a de-identified chart before a final offer conversation.
Where can I find and apply to mental health therapy jobs?
