Tips for Your Primary Care Physician Job Search
Tailor your CV to each setting
A community health center wants to see patient panel volume and chronic disease management experience, while a direct primary care practice cares more about operational autonomy. Reorder your bullet points to lead with what matters most in that specific environment before you apply.
Highlight board certification status clearly
Recruiters scan for ABFM or ABIM board certification in the first ten seconds. Put your certification, expiration cycle, and any recertification activity in the header of your CV, not buried in a separate credentials section.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists primary care physician openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by practice model
Fee-for-service, value-based, and direct primary care models have different productivity expectations and day-to-day workflows. Clarify which model a role uses before you apply so your cover letter speaks directly to how you practice and what outcomes you track.
Prepare for the clinical and cultural interview
Most primary care interviews include both a panel discussion with physicians and a separate conversation with administration. Expect scenario questions on managing complex polychronic patients and questions on your approach to HEDIS or quality metrics alongside the standard culture-fit conversation.
Negotiate non-salary terms during the offer stage
CME allowance, call schedule, panel size caps, and tail coverage on malpractice insurance are all negotiable and directly affect your day-to-day practice. Review the partnership or employment agreement terms before signing, not after you have accepted verbally.
Primary Care Physician Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most primary care physicians?
The companies hiring the most primary care physicians right now include Optum, ChenMed, and CommonSpirit Health, with the largest share of openings in Massachusetts, New York, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Health systems, federally qualified health centers, and large multispecialty groups consistently post the highest volume of openings.
How many primary care physician jobs are remote?
About 2% of primary care physician openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with most remote roles concentrated in telehealth-only primary care, chronic disease management, and utilization review positions rather than traditional in-person panel-based practice.
How do you become a primary care physician?
You complete a bachelor's degree, pass the MCAT, and earn an MD or DO from an accredited medical school. After medical school you match into a residency program in family medicine, internal medicine, or a related primary care specialty, complete that training, obtain a state medical license, and achieve board certification through the relevant certifying body before practicing independently.
Can you get a primary care physician job with limited attending experience?
Yes, new attendings are routinely hired directly out of residency, especially by federally qualified health centers, rural health systems, and large employed-physician groups that have structured onboarding programs. Locum tenens positions are a practical way to build attending experience across different practice environments before committing to a permanent role.
What does the primary care physician interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a phone or video screen with a physician recruiter, followed by an on-site visit that includes tours of the clinic or hospital, meetings with the medical director and department chief, a separate conversation with administrative leadership, and often an informal lunch with current physicians. Some systems also include a credentialing pre-check and reference calls before extending a formal offer.
Where can I find and apply to primary care physician jobs?
