Align Your Degree to the Role
Amgen's Research Scientist postings consistently require a PhD in biology, biochemistry, or a closely related field. USCIS specialty occupation approval depends on a direct match between your degree field and the role, so a general science degree may not be sufficient without supporting coursework documentation.
Target Therapeutic Areas Where Amgen Actively Hires
Amgen's most consistent Research Scientist hiring concentrates in oncology and cardiometabolic research. Positioning your application around relevant assay experience or disease-area publications signals fit to both the recruiter and the hiring team before the interview stage.
Understand How Amgen Handles LCA Filing
Before your H-1B petition is filed, your employer must certify a Labor Condition Application with DOL confirming prevailing wage compliance. At a company Amgen's size, this typically moves through a centralized immigration team, so ask your recruiter early which law firm manages the process.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open Research Scientist Roles
Filtering by visa type and role is the fastest way to find active Research Scientist postings at Amgen that are explicitly open to sponsorship. Migrate Mate lets you do exactly that, so you spend time applying to roles where sponsorship is confirmed rather than guessing.
Prepare Your Publication and Patent Record Early
Amgen's immigration filings for Research Scientists often rely on your scientific output to support specialty occupation and, where applicable, EB-2 National Interest Waiver petitions. Compiling a clean list of peer-reviewed publications, citations, and any patent contributions before the offer stage speeds up the process.
Ask About OPT STEM Extension Eligibility at Offer Stage
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm with Amgen's HR team that the role is listed under a STEM-qualifying SOC code, which most Research Scientist positions are. This lets you request a 24-month STEM OPT extension from your DSO before initial OPT expires, bridging the gap to an H-1B cap cycle.

Find Research Scientist at Amgen JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Amgen sponsor H-1B visas for Research Scientists?
Yes, Amgen sponsors H-1B visas for Research Scientist roles. Amgen is a registered H-1B employer and has a centralized immigration function that manages petitions for scientific staff. If you receive an offer, your employment start date will depend on where you fall in the H-1B cap cycle, which opens each April for an October 1 start, unless you qualify for a cap-exempt transfer from a previous employer.
How do I apply for Research Scientist jobs at Amgen?
Applications go through Amgen's careers portal at amgen.com/careers, where you can filter by job category and location. If you need visa sponsorship, look for explicit sponsorship language in the job description. Migrate Mate also lists Amgen's open Research Scientist roles filtered by visa type, so you can identify which postings are open to sponsored candidates before submitting your application.
Which visa types does Amgen commonly use for Research Scientists?
Amgen sponsors H-1B visas for most Research Scientist hires and also supports E-3 visas for Australian citizens, TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals, and J-1 visas for postdoctoral or exchange-based roles. For long-term employees, Amgen also initiates PERM-based Green Card filings under the EB-2 and EB-3 categories, and F-1 OPT and CPT are supported for students already in the pipeline.
What qualifications does Amgen expect for Research Scientist roles?
Most Research Scientist postings at Amgen require a PhD in a life sciences discipline such as molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, or immunology. Postdoctoral experience is a differentiator for senior-level research roles, and hands-on expertise in specific techniques, such as CRISPR, flow cytometry, or in vivo disease models, is often listed as required rather than preferred. Industry experience in a relevant therapeutic area is weighted heavily at the mid-level and above.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Research Scientist at Amgen?
If you're starting on F-1 OPT, you can begin work immediately while Amgen files your H-1B petition in the April lottery window. If selected, your H-1B status begins October 1. For new H-1B transfers from a cap-exempt employer, USCIS standard processing takes three to five months, with premium processing available for a 15-business-day adjudication. PERM-based Green Card filings, which Amgen initiates for eligible research staff, typically take two to four years from labor certification to approval.
