Align your credentials with Ascension's clinical needs
Ascension's most active hiring sits in nursing, allied health, and health informatics. Before applying, confirm your degree maps directly to the role's required field. Consular officers and HR teams at large health systems both scrutinize the degree-to-job match closely.
Verify Ascension's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm Ascension's specific hiring entity is enrolled before you sign an offer, since large health systems sometimes hire through subsidiary legal entities that have separate E-Verify status.
Target roles with clear H-1B transition pathways
Ascension files H-1B petitions for healthcare IT analysts, clinical data specialists, and health informatics roles. Prioritizing positions in those departments improves your OPT-to-H-1B continuity, since your employer already understands the sponsorship process for that job category.
Research prevailing wage tiers using OFLC Wage Search
Look up your target role's wage level on OFLC Wage Search before negotiating your offer. Ascension's H-1B filings are concentrated at specific wage levels by occupation. Knowing the prevailing wage for your metro area prevents underpayment issues that can complicate a future H-1B petition.
Use Migrate Mate to find Ascension's verified filing history
Search Ascension on Migrate Mate to see its H-1B and EB-2/EB-3 filing history by job title and location. That data tells you which roles Ascension has sponsored before, so you can target departments where international hiring is already an established practice rather than an exception.
Submit your I-983 training plan before your OPT start date
For STEM OPT, USCIS requires a signed I-983 training plan before your extension begins. Coordinate with Ascension's HR team early, because large hospital systems often route these requests through legal or compliance departments that have longer internal turnaround times than smaller employers.
Ascension OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Ascension sponsor OPT visas?
Ascension doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization granted by USCIS to F-1 students, not something employers petition for. What Ascension does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, Ascension must be enrolled in E-Verify, which enables the 24-month extension through your Designated School Official.
Which departments at Ascension typically hire OPT students?
Ascension's strongest OPT hiring tends to concentrate in health informatics, clinical data analytics, healthcare IT, and administrative operations. Allied health and nursing roles also appear regularly. Departments with recurring H-1B filings are generally the most experienced with international hiring workflows and more likely to navigate the OPT-to-H-1B transition smoothly.
How do I confirm Ascension will support my STEM OPT extension?
Ask Ascension's HR or legal team to confirm the specific legal entity on your offer letter is enrolled in E-Verify before you accept. Then work with your DSO to file the STEM OPT extension at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires. USCIS must approve the extension before your current authorization ends.
What is the typical timeline from OPT hire to H-1B sponsorship at Ascension?
There's no fixed timeline, but H-1B sponsorship typically requires at least six to twelve months of employment before Ascension initiates the process. The H-1B cap registration window opens each March for an October 1 start date, so your hire date relative to that window matters significantly for planning your transition.
How do I find open OPT roles at Ascension?
Use Migrate Mate to search Ascension's verified H-1B and EB-2/EB-3 filing history by job title and location, which shows you where Ascension has a track record of sponsoring international workers. Then apply directly to those roles through Ascension's careers portal, noting your OPT authorization and expected end date in your application materials.
How does Ascension hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Ascension can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Ascension's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
