Target roles matching your degree exactly
Cleveland Clinic's clinical and research departments evaluate OPT candidates on degree-to-role alignment. A biomedical engineering degree supports a research associate role; a health informatics degree supports IT clinical positions. Use O*NET to confirm your occupation's standard educational requirements before applying.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Cleveland Clinic is enrolled, but always verify this independently through E-Verify's employer search before signing an offer, since enrollment status must be active on your extension start date.
Check your OPT end date against hiring timelines
Cleveland Clinic's hiring process for clinical and research roles can take eight to twelve weeks. If your OPT EAD expires within that window, your start date may fall outside your authorized period. Apply early and communicate your authorization end date directly with your recruiter.
Search Cleveland Clinic's LCA history on Migrate Mate
Before applying, use Migrate Mate to review Cleveland Clinic's Labor Condition Application filing history by role and location. This shows which departments have sponsored work visas most consistently, helping you target teams where visa sponsorship is already an established practice.
Prepare your I-983 training plan before the offer stage
For STEM OPT, Cleveland Clinic must co-sign your I-983 training plan, which details your learning objectives and supervision structure. Draft your I-983 early using USCIS guidance so you can present a complete document to HR at the offer stage rather than scrambling after acceptance.
Ask HR explicitly about H-1B sponsorship timelines
Cleveland Clinic has sponsored H-1B visas for employees who began on OPT, but sponsorship isn't automatic. During your offer negotiation, ask whether your role is eligible for H-1B sponsorship and what the internal approval process looks like so you can plan your status transition ahead of the October 1 cap deadline.
Cleveland Clinic OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Cleveland Clinic sponsor OPT visas?
Cleveland Clinic doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students, not a visa an employer petitions for. What Cleveland Clinic does is hire students who already hold a valid OPT EAD. It's also enrolled in E-Verify, which is required if you want to use the STEM OPT 24-month extension while working there.
Which departments at Cleveland Clinic typically hire OPT students?
Clinical research, health informatics, biomedical engineering, and data analytics are the departments where Cleveland Clinic most consistently hires candidates on OPT. These roles align closely with STEM-designated degree programs, making them strong candidates for the STEM OPT extension. Nursing and direct patient care roles often require licensure that limits OPT eligibility regardless of work authorization status.
How do I approach the OPT-to-H-1B transition at Cleveland Clinic?
Start the conversation about H-1B sponsorship before you accept your offer, not after your OPT is nearly exhausted. Cleveland Clinic has an internal immigration process for H-1B petitions, and your role must be approved for sponsorship at the department level. USCIS requires H-1B petitions to be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start, so timing matters significantly.
How do I find OPT jobs at Cleveland Clinic that match my visa status?
Use Migrate Mate to filter Cleveland Clinic roles by visa type and review its Labor Condition Application filing history by occupation. This helps you identify which specific job titles and Cleveland Clinic locations have supported work visa sponsorship in the past, so you're applying to roles with an established precedent rather than guessing based on job descriptions alone.
What documents should I prepare before applying to Cleveland Clinic on OPT?
Have your OPT EAD, I-20 with an updated OPT authorization page, and your SEVIS record ready before your first interview. For STEM OPT specifically, prepare a draft I-983 training plan so you can demonstrate to HR that you understand the supervision and reporting requirements. Checking prevailing wages for your target role using OFLC Wage Search also helps you negotiate an offer that meets DOL wage standards.
How does Cleveland Clinic hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Cleveland Clinic can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Cleveland Clinic's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
