Align your degree to qualifying roles
Deaconess hires OPT students in roles where your degree field directly matches the job. Review O*NET occupation profiles for healthcare administration, clinical informatics, or allied health to confirm your degree supports the role before applying.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT students need their employer enrolled in E-Verify to qualify for the 24-month extension. Verify Deaconess Health System's E-Verify status with HR early in the offer process, not after you've already accepted, to avoid losing extension eligibility.
Submit your OPT EAD before your start date
USCIS recommends filing your OPT application at least 90 days before your program end date. Deaconess can't legally employ you under OPT until your EAD card arrives, so delayed filing directly pushes back your earliest possible start date.
Search Deaconess OPT roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Deaconess Health System job listings by OPT eligibility and department. This surfaces roles where Deaconess has a pattern of hiring international students, saving you from applying to positions unlikely to accommodate OPT work authorization.
Target departments with H-1B filing history
Deaconess has sponsored H-1B visas in healthcare and medical services roles. Prioritizing departments with that filing history improves your odds of a long-term transition, since those teams already understand the sponsorship process and budget for it.
Prepare your I-983 training plan proactively
For STEM OPT, your employer must sign Form I-983, detailing your training goals and supervision structure. Draft a completed I-983 aligned to your Deaconess role before your offer letter is finalized so HR isn't encountering the form for the first time during onboarding.
Deaconess Health System OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Deaconess Health System sponsor OPT visas?
Deaconess Health System doesn't sponsor OPT directly, OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to you as an F-1 student, not a petition the employer files. What Deaconess does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, Deaconess must be enrolled in E-Verify, which allows you to extend your work authorization by 24 months.
Which departments at Deaconess Health System typically hire OPT students?
Deaconess Health System most commonly places OPT students in clinical support, healthcare administration, health informatics, and allied health roles. Graduates with degrees in health sciences, nursing, public health, or health information management tend to find the strongest fit. Administrative and technology-facing roles within hospital operations also surface opportunities for F-1 graduates.
How do I start the OPT application process before joining Deaconess?
Your OPT application runs through your school's DSO and USCIS, not through Deaconess. Work with your DSO to file at least 90 days before your program ends. Once your EAD arrives, you can begin work. Deaconess HR will need a copy of your EAD as part of the I-9 employment verification process before your start date.
What is the typical timeline for transitioning from OPT to H-1B at Deaconess?
The transition depends on the annual H-1B cap and lottery, which USCIS runs each April for an October start date. You'd need Deaconess to file your H-1B petition while you're still on OPT or within the cap-gap extension period. Starting the conversation with your manager and HR at least six months before your OPT expires gives you the best lead time.
How do I find OPT-eligible job openings at Deaconess Health System?
Migrate Mate lets you filter job listings at Deaconess Health System by visa type, so you can identify roles where the team has a history of hiring OPT students. Cross-referencing those results with Deaconess's own careers page helps you confirm current openings and apply directly with a targeted application that addresses your OPT authorization upfront.
How does Deaconess Health System hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Deaconess Health System can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Deaconess Health System's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
