Target GIS and spatial roles first
Esri's core hiring need is technical talent in geographic information systems, spatial data engineering, and software development. Aligning your resume to GIS-adjacent skills, even adjacent ones like Python, data pipelines, or cloud infrastructure, puts you in the strongest candidate pool for OPT hires.
Verify Esri's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm Esri's enrollment status before your offer letter is signed, not after. This single step determines whether your 24-month extension is even possible and affects your entire post-graduation authorization window.
Time your OPT start date around Esri's offer
You control your OPT start date within a 60-day window after your program end date. If Esri extends an offer with a specific start date, request your OPT EAD to align with it. A mismatched start date creates an unauthorized gap that neither USCIS nor Esri can retroactively fix.
Research Esri's H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Esri has sponsored H-1B visas across technical and professional roles. Use Migrate Mate to review Esri's historical H-1B filings by job title and location, so you can assess which teams regularly convert OPT employees and structure your OPT role to maximize your transition prospects.
Match your OPT role to your degree field precisely
USCIS requires OPT employment to be directly related to your major field of study. At Esri, a software engineering role needs a CS or engineering degree behind it. A mismatch, even a partial one, can invalidate your OPT authorization regardless of how strong your offer letter is.
Benchmark your offer against OFLC Wage Search data
When Esri later files your H-1B, DOL will require a prevailing wage for your role and location. Look up your job title on OFLC Wage Search before negotiating your OPT salary. Starting well below prevailing wage creates an awkward renegotiation when H-1B sponsorship begins and signals misclassification risk.
Esri OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Esri sponsor OPT visas?
Esri hires F-1 students who already hold OPT work authorization, it does not petition for OPT, since OPT is granted by USCIS directly to you, not through your employer. Esri has an established record of bringing on OPT students in technical and professional roles and supporting the transition to H-1B sponsorship for qualifying employees.
Which departments at Esri typically hire OPT students?
Esri's strongest OPT hiring tends to cluster in software engineering, GIS development, data science, product management, and professional services. Roles requiring spatial analysis skills or proficiency in Esri's ArcGIS platform are particularly well-matched to OPT candidates from geography, computer science, environmental science, and engineering programs.
How do I confirm Esri supports the STEM OPT extension?
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. You can confirm Esri's E-Verify participation through the E-Verify employer search tool before you accept an offer. Your DSO also needs to update your I-20 to reflect the extension, so start the process at least 90 days before your initial OPT period ends.
How do I find open OPT roles at Esri?
Use Migrate Mate to filter Esri's job listings by OPT eligibility and review the company's H-1B filing history by role, which signals which positions have historically led to long-term sponsorship. Applying directly through Esri's careers page is fine, but cross-referencing with DOL data helps you target roles where visa transitions are routine rather than uncertain.
How does the OPT-to-H-1B transition work at Esri?
If Esri decides to sponsor your H-1B, the company files a petition with USCIS on your behalf during the annual H-1B cap registration window each March. Your OPT EAD must still be valid through October 1 of the cap year, or you'll need cap-gap protection to bridge the gap. Esri's HR and immigration team typically coordinates the filing timeline with you directly.
How does Esri hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Esri can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Esri's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
